Francis Ford Coppola Unveils First ‘Megalopolis’ Footage in Poignant Tribute to Late Wife

Sci-Fi Epic Decades in the Making Gets Emotional Tease Ahead of Cannes Premiere

In a heartfelt gesture, legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola has released the first preview footage from his long-awaited sci-fi project ‘Megalopolis’ as a birthday tribute to his late wife Eleanor. The haunting teaser offers a glimpse into the mind-bending world Coppola has been crafting for over 40 years, while doubling as a touching remembrance of his partner of six decades.

The visually striking footage introduces Adam Driver as Cesar Catilina, an architect with the ability to stop time itself. Perched precariously on a ledge high above a sprawling futuristic metropolis, Cesar appears on the verge of suicide before snapping his fingers to freeze the world around him in eerie stillness. As clouds hang motionless and yellow cabs float suspended in mid-air, the sequence captures the epic, metaphysical scale of Coppola’s ambitious vision.

“Megalopolis has always been a film dedicated to my dear wife Eleanor,” Coppola, 84, wrote in an Instagram post unveiling the tease. “I really had hoped to celebrate her birthday together this May 4th. But sadly that was not to be, so let me share with everyone a gift on her behalf.”

Eleanor Coppola, a celebrated documentary filmmaker herself, passed away on April 12th at age 87. She shared a storybook romance with Francis spanning over 60 years of marriage and several of his most iconic films like The Godfather before her recent death.

While brief, the Megalopolis footage hints at the meeting of grand ideas and intimate human drama that has defined Coppola’s greatest works. With a stacked ensemble including Nathalie Emmanuel, Giancarlo Esposito, Aubrey Plaza and Shia LaBeouf, the $120 million self-financed passion project represents a true auteur’s wildly ambitious final act.

Despite reports of the film struggling to find distribution, Coppola remains defiant about its future prospects. “This is what happened with Apocalypse Now 40 years ago…but the audience never stopped going to see the film, and to this day it is still in very profitable distribution,” he stated. “I am sure this will be the same situation with Megalopolis. It will stand the test of time.”

First Megalopolis Footage 2

The world will get its first full look at Megalopolis when it world premieres at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17th. For now, this elegiac teaser serves as a poetic dedication from one of cinema’s true visionary artists to the great love of his life.
