Knives Out 3 Taps Josh O’Connor and Cailee Spaeny to Unravel Wake Up Dead Man Mystery

The Knives Out franchise, which has captivated audiences with its intricate whodunit mysteries and star-studded ensembles, is gearing up for its next chapter with the addition of two promising actors. Writer-director Rian Johnson has tapped Josh O’Connor and Cailee Spaeny to join Daniel Craig’s eccentric detective Benoit Blanc in the third installment of the series, titled Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.

Following the critical and commercial success of Knives Out (2019) and its Netflix-released sequel Glass Onion (2022), anticipation has been building for the next installment in Johnson’s modern take on the classic murder mystery genre. While plot details remain tightly under wraps, the announcement of O’Connor and Spaeny as the first cast members has set the stage for another compelling tale of deception and intrigue.

O’Connor, fresh off his acclaimed performance in Luca Guadagnino’s romantic sports drama Challengers, has been steadily garnering recognition for his versatile acting abilities. Best known for his Emmy-winning portrayal of a young Prince Charles in The Crown, O’Connor has demonstrated his range across various projects, including Emma, God’s Own Country, and Lee. His casting in Wake Up Dead Man marks another significant step in his rising career.

Joining O’Connor is Cailee Spaeny, whose star has been on the ascent following her standout roles in titles such as On the Basis of Sex, Mare of Easttown, and Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla. Spaeny’s recent appearance in A24’s divisive Civil War further showcased her talent, and she is set to grace the big screen once again in the highly anticipated Alien: Romulus.

Both O’Connor and Spaeny have proven themselves as versatile performers, making them ideal additions to the Knives Out ensemble. While their characters remain shrouded in mystery, fans can speculate about the dynamic between their roles based on the previous installments’ penchant for exploring interconnected relationships within the central group of suspects.

The casting announcement comes as production for Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is slated to begin in the coming weeks, with more ensemble members likely to be revealed in the near future. Rian Johnson, who has masterfully crafted the franchise’s intricate narratives, will once again helm the project as writer and director, ensuring a seamless continuation of the Knives Out universe’s captivating storytelling.

With Daniel Craig reprising his role as the enigmatic Benoit Blanc, the addition of O’Connor and Spaeny sets the stage for a fresh and compelling mystery. As the anticipation builds for the film’s 2025 release on Netflix, fans eagerly await further glimpses into the next twisted tale that will challenge Blanc’s sleuthing abilities and keep audiences guessing until the final reveal.
