Mel Gibson’s ‘Flight Risk’ Starring Unhinged Mark Wahlberg Set for Theatrical Liftoff This Fall

The director's first film since 'Hacksaw Ridge' pits a psychotic mob hitman against an unlikely hostage situation

Mel Gibson is making his return to the director’s chair, and it’s going to be a wild ride. Lionsgate has set an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date for Gibson’s idiosyncratic new thriller Flight Risk, starring Mark Wahlberg as a mentally unhinged mob enforcer.

The long-gestating project reteams Gibson with Wahlberg after their previous collaborations on films like Father Stu and Daddy’s Home 2. But based on early details, Flight Risk looks to be a significant departure from their prior work together.

In the film, the frequently intense Wahlberg takes his intensity to another level, playing a balding and utterly psychotic hitman. When he tricks a federal agent into allowing him to pilot a plane transporting an informant (Topher Grace) out of a remote area, all hell breaks loose in what’s been described as an “intimate, very contained” but “zany” thrill ride.

“Mark is fantastic,” gushed producer Alex Lebovici in a previous interview. “And Michelle Dockery, who is one of the main leads, and Topher Grace. It is definitely different than anything [Gibson’s] ever done before…It’s just a wild and fun thrill ride.”

For the famously committed Wahlberg, disappearing into such an unhinged role could produce some of his most exciting work in years. His co-stars Dockery and Grace are certainly no slouches either, setting the stage for some potentially electric on-screen tension.

Flight Risk marks Gibson’s first time directing since the Oscar-nominated 2016 WWII drama Hacksaw Ridge. The controversial filmmaker has spent much of the last decade trying to mount a sequel to his 2004 biblical epic The Passion of the Christ, which continues to be mired in development.

Before returning to that weighty subject matter, Flight Risk allows Gibson to flex some different creative muscles with this pulpy, high-concept thriller. One can easily envision his talent for gritty violence and morally complex characters colliding in twisted new ways with such an unrestrained premise.

After Wahlberg’s recent powerful turn in the Oscar-contending Arthur the King, the chance to see him go full unrepentantly psycho under Gibson’s guidance has to be tantalizing for fans. Flight Risk soars into theaters on that perfect pre-Halloween weekend of October 18th.
