In a move that promises to thrill fans of both Nicolas Cage and the iconic Spider-Man franchise, Prime Video has officially greenlit a live-action series based on the fan-favorite Spider-Man Noir character, with Cage set to take on the lead role. Titled simply “Noir,” the series will embrace the gritty, noir-inspired aesthetic of its comic book counterpart, transporting viewers to a 1930s New York City where a grizzled private investigator grapples with his current career and his past life as the city’s only superhero.

The announcement was made during Prime Video’s inaugural upfront presentation, confirming months of rumors and speculation about Cage’s involvement in the highly anticipated project. Notably, this marks the actor’s first foray into television since the ill-fated 1981 pilot “The Best of Times,” adding an extra layer of excitement for fans eager to witness his debut in the streaming arena.

Noir will explore the complex and morally ambiguous world of the private eye Spider-Man, a character that Cage himself has expressed immense affection for. In fact, the actor previously brought the character to life in animated form in the critically acclaimed “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” where he served as a mentor and ally to Miles Morales. Now, Cage will have the opportunity to delve deeper into the character’s psyche, painting a portrait that is anything but black-and-white.

The series boasts an impressive creative team, with Spider-Verse co-creators Christopher Miller and Phil Lord attached as executive producers alongside Amy Pascal. Additionally, Oren Uziel (The Lost City) and Steve Lightfoot (The Punisher) will serve as co-showrunners, while Emmy-winning Fleabag director Harry Bradbeer has been tapped to helm the first two episodes.

Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television, expressed her excitement over Cage’s involvement, stating, “We are absolutely thrilled to have Nicolas Cage starring in this series! No one else could bring such pathos, pain, and heart to this singular character. Along with our brilliant producers and partners at Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, we couldn’t ask for a better team to explore this reimagining of such an iconic character in Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters.”

While Noir promises to be a standalone adventure, Cage’s involvement in the Spider-Verse is far from over. He is also set to reprise his role as the animated version of the character in the upcoming “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” joining an expanded team of multiversal Spider-heroes as they embark on a new mission to save the Spider-Verse.

As production on Noir gears up, fans can anticipate a truly immersive and gritty exploration of the Spider-Man mythos, with Cage’s talent and the creative team’s vision poised to deliver a fresh and compelling take on the beloved character. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated series, which promises to be a must-watch for both Nicolas Cage enthusiasts and Spider-Man devotees alike.
