While Netflix’s recent renewal of its hit sci-fi series 3 Body Problem raised some confusion over whether multiple seasons were confirmed, the show’s creators have clarified their multi-season vision to properly adapt the entire Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy of novels.
In an odd initial announcement, Netflix stated 3 Body Problem would receive “additional episodes” to “finish the story” based on Liu Cixin’s acclaimed book series. This vague wording left it unclear if the series was only renewed for a second season or guaranteed to continue beyond that.
However, in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunners D.B. Weiss, David Benioff, and Alexander Woo have provided key details clarifying Netflix’s long-term commitment.
“We knew going into this how many hours we need to tell the rest of the story because we’ve got a roadmap through to the end,” explained Weiss. “And we have what we need to get to the end as intended from when we started.”
Benioff confirmed, “By the time we finish with the show, it will be seven years we’ve devoted to it. We’re now at a place where we get to tell the rest of the story, and, yes, we have enough time to tell the rest of the story the way we want to and that’s immensely gratifying.”
The creators are already deep into writing what they expect to be a 3-year process for the next batch of episodes, hinting at a likely multi-season structure rather than a limited final installment. Benioff, Weiss, and Woo previously suggested needing 3-4 seasons to fully adapt the trilogy’s remaining two books, The Dark Forest and Death’s End.
This clarification indicates Netflix has granted the creative team’s preferred runway to conclude their ambitious sci-fi adaptation as originally envisioned. It marks a rarity for the streamer, which has frequently cancelled shows abruptly before reaching a proper ending in recent years.
The extended renewal provides a stark contrast to Netflix’s quick axing of fellow sci-fi series like 1899 after a single season. It’s a resounding vote of confidence in 3 Body Problem’s compelling vision of humanity’s first interactions with an alien civilization arriving from across the cosmos.
With season 1 exploring just the earliest rumblings of this fateful encounter, the showrunners now have the necessary breathing room to depict the saga’s world-altering events across a satisfying, deliberately paced storyline. Fans can rest assured that whenever new episodes eventually materialize, they’ll organically progress toward an intended finale adapted from Cixin’s complete literary work.
