The highly anticipated Transformers One made a thunderous debut at the Annecy Animation Festival, drawing enthusiastic cheers and laughs as director Josh Cooley unveiled his fresh vision for the iconic franchise’s origin story.
In the first public screening of the Paramount animated feature, the star-studded vocal talents of Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Brian Tyree Henry and others brought new life and depth to familiar Autobot and Decepticon characters. Despite being an unfinished cut, the rapturous audience response – including a standing ovation – signaled Cooley has successfully reinvigorated the 40-year-old property.
“I’m very, very excited,” Cooley told the crowd before the lights dimmed. “So much talent and nostalgic love has gone into this movie.”
The director, known for his Oscar-winning work on Pixar’s Inside Out, paid tribute to the Transformers legacy while hinting at bold new creative directions. “We wanted to make a film my grandmother would understand. She’s a massive Transformers fan,” he quipped.
Cooley’s reimagining explores the once-brotherly bond between Optimus Prime (Hemsworth) and Megatron that soured into an apocalyptic conflict. Early reviews from the Annecy premiere praised the emotionally resonant origin story grounded in sharp character work and stunning visuals realized by ILM’s industry-leading effects artistry.
Crucially, the screening also highlighted Transformers One’s abundant humor – a key ingredient too often missing from the live-action film franchise. Keegan-Michael Key’s wisecracking Transformer elicited raucous laughter, as did several surprising narrative moments theatrically playing out the story’s high stakes.
With anticipation now at a fever pitch, Cooley’s lovingly crafted revamp looks poised to wow general audiences when Transformers One unleashes in theaters on September 20th. After decades of cinematic underachievement, the iconic Hasbro brand may have finally found its definitive big-screen adaptation – and the first offering of a rejuvenated, creatively ambitious animated universe.
