At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Alien film director Fede Álvarez had some surprising things to say about one of the franchise’s least liked movies. While working on his upcoming movie “Alien: Romulus,” Álvarez admitted that “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem” from 2007 is not well liked. Most fans think it’s one of the worst Alien films. But Álvarez said it’s not all bad – that movie has some really gory kills that are still pretty cool to watch!
Even though “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem” only has a 12% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning most critics didn’t like it, Álvarez pointed out that every movie has its moments. During the panel discussion about “Alien: Romulus,” the cast and crew shared some insights into Fede’s new film too.
Álvarez wants the audience to always feel tense, like any character could meet their end at any second. He also said the movie explores the bond between siblings. Actors Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux and more praised the movie’s practical special effects over computer graphics. Jonsson talked about the challenge of playing an “artificial person.”
Directors Ridley Scott and Guillermo del Toro, known for scary movies of their own, even joined in with questions. When Scott asked Álvarez to rank the Alien films, he stuck “Alien” at number one and “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem” at the bottom, placing the rest somewhere in the middle.
“Alien: Romulus” takes place between the first two Alien films, following young space explorers who encounter the infamous Xenomorph. Álvarez promised fans the movie respects the franchise but tells its own new story. At the panel, they showed sneak peek footage and a scene with a Chestburster that apparently led to a real injury on set for Jonsson! By the sounds of it, “Alien: Romulus” looks to give fans of scares what they want when it launches this August.
