Director James Gunn has concluded the lengthy principal photography process on his eagerly awaited Superman reboot, marking a pivotal moment in Warner Bros. Discovery’s efforts to establish an interconnected DC film universe under his creative stewardship.
As the co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios, Gunn wears many hats at the studio, guiding the vision both behind and in front of the camera. With filming now complete after months of production, Gunn took to social media to celebrate the casting and crew who helped bring his vision for the iconic hero to life.
In a heartfelt Twitter post, Gunn revealed wrapping had taken place in Svalbard, Norway, where scenes featuring Superman’s famous Fortress of Solitude were filmed. Accompanying the announcement was a behind-the-scenes photo from the cast and crew’s first week shooting in the Arctic locale, showing Gunn alongside DC Studios co-president Peter Safran.
Of completing principal photography, Gunn praised the “commitment, creativity, and hard work” shown daily by every member of the 300+ person production. Stars like British actress Rachel Brosnahan and Euphoria breakout Colton Haynes pushed through challenging conditions to portray Lois Lane and new character Jay Crawford, respectively.
And that’s a wrap.
God bless our cast and crew whose commitment, creativity, and hard work have brought this project to life. I set out to make a movie about a good man in a world that isn’t always so much. And the goodness and kindness and love I’ve encountered on a daily basis… pic.twitter.com/9Y52HEVXpF— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) July 30, 2024
According to insiders, filming took the production to remote locations worldwide over six months, utilizing Canada, England and Iceland in addition to Norway. Scenes shot on soundstages in Atlanta will receive visual effects touch-ups to realize Krypton and the Daily Planet offices.
With post-production now underway on the $275 million tentpole, anticipation is high among fans and execs alike to see Gunn’s envisioning of Superman’s origins. David Corenswet takes on the dual role of Clark Kent and his iconic superhero alter-ego. Early reactions have praised Corenswet’s earnest and grounded take compared to past portrayals.
When it ultimately launches on July 14, 2025, Gunn’s Superman aims to kickstart a shared universe with a spirit of hope and heroism. Under the co-chairmen’s collective vision, the DCU promises interconnectivity and character-focused stories starting with the iconic first family of comics.
