It looks like Viaplay is shaking some things up based on their latest earnings report. Overall revenue was just a tiny bit lower, but their core business actually saw a small rise in cash. Even better, they’ve seriously cut back on losses compared to last year.
The new CEO seems optimistic about changes they’re making. Things like boosting partnerships for big sports like Formula 1 and UEFA are helping attract more viewers and money opportunities. Makes sense – sports are huge these days.
While subscriber numbers dipped a bit, it seems price bumps in most areas offset that. And it’s clear Viaplay has been trimming the fat after laying off almost a third of their staff last year. They also pulled out of some not-so-hot markets like the UK.
In other TV news, Channel 4 snagged the rights to a couple gripping doc projects. One looks back at the Malaysian Airlines crash 10 years ago over Ukraine – that was totally wild. And the other follows the huge tsunami that devastated parts of Asia back in 2004. Both should be intense to watch with real stories.
Netflix is adding some big names to their new Australian drama “Territory” too. Anna Torv and Michael Dorman are on board to star in the series, which promises drama on a huge cattle ranch dealing with powerful groups vying for control.
And for film buffs, the prestigious Locarno Film Festival unveiled its jury members who’ll be picking the winners. A-listers like Luca Marinelli, Payal Kapadia and Tim Blake Nelson will help dole out awards when it kicks off in a few weeks. Should be some major talent in competition!
All in all, it looks like the entertainment industry is keeping things interesting between strategy shifts, new shows/docs and big film festivals on the horizon. Exciting stuff!
