Fans got way more than they bargained for at San Diego Comic-Con last month. Marvel Studios announced some major changes that nobody saw coming. Most shockingly – Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but not as Iron Man!
It was totally unexpected when Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, revealed Downey Jr. will step into the role of Victor Von Doom in the upcoming Fantastic Four movie. You guys remember Iron Man, right? Downey Jr. played that super cool hero for years. Now instead of saving the day, his new part will be as the evil Dr. Doom – the Fantastic Four’s biggest enemy. Pretty wild change, if you ask me!
Downey Jr.’s big reveal was straight-up awesome. He walked on stage wearing Doom’s signature green cloak and mask. When he took it off, the crowd went nuts cheering for him. “New face, same game plan,” Downey Jr. joked about swapping heroes for villains.

Aside from the Downey Jr. bombshell, Feige had some other surprises in store. The Avengers movies that are coming in 2026 and 2027 will have different names than planned. Plus, some of the characters Marvel fans expected to see may be MIA. Feige warned that with so many potential heroes to feature, tough choices will have to be made about who actually makes the cut.
More details were shared about other upcoming MCU movies too. We got a sneak peek of the villain Galactus in the Fantastic Four flick. The Thunderbolts trailer looked intense based on the stars that showed up.
After the box office success of Deadpool & Wolverine, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is changing things up in a major way with Downey Jr. as Doom. With so many new phases on the horizon, it’s anyone’s guess what other unbelievable announcements might be in store!
