Julie Plec, co-creator of the hit supernatural drama “The Vampire Diaries,” has hinted at the possibility of a new series in the franchise. During a promotional event for her new Max series “The Girls on The Bus,” Plec shared her enthusiasm for expanding the “Vampire Diaries” universe.
“I have a story I still want to tell,” Plec told Screen Rant. “I know that the people who are on the book have a story that they still want to tell. I’m sure Warner Bros. has plenty of stories they want to tell. So, the hope is they’ll give me the opportunity to do it again. We’ll see.”
While no specific details were provided about the potential new series, Plec suggested that L. J. Smith’s original novels could serve as inspiration. The franchise, which began with “The Vampire Diaries” in 2009, has already spawned two successful spin-offs: “The Originals” and “Legacies.”
Despite the cancellation of “Legacies” in 2022 following The CW’s acquisition by Nexstar, fan interest in the franchise remains strong. Potential avenues for expansion could include exploring a broader range of supernatural beings from the novels, such as kitsunes, psychics, and more witches.
The original series, which ran for 171 episodes from 2009 to 2017, centered around a love triangle involving Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and vampire brothers Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). It significantly boosted the careers of its lead actors and established a dedicated fanbase.
While Warner Bros. has not officially announced any new series, Plec’s comments suggest that the rich mythology of “The Vampire Diaries” universe still has many stories to tell. Possible directions include delving deeper into the history of Mystic Falls or exploring the Bennett Witches’ lineage.
As fans eagerly await news of a potential new series, all seasons of “The Vampire Diaries” are currently available to stream on Max.
