Hidden among rolling green hills and colorful forests lies the extraordinary world of the Uplands. Here, players embark on a voyage of discovery aboard a trusted bird companion as they seek to catalog the many magical creatures calling this landscape home.

The latest project from indie developer Hollow Ponds, best known for their whimsical explorations Hohokum and I Am Dead, Flock casts off from the shores of tradition to deliver a one-of-a-kind creature-collecting experience.

While Flock draws inspiration from classics of the genre like Pokemon, this is no run-of-the-mill monster-catching expedition. Released on Nintendo Switch and PC, the game trades competition for companionship as players wing their way across fanciful forests and mist-veiled meadows, gazing upon wonders real and imagined.

Here, the goal is not dominance over wildlife but delight in observing nature’s marvels in all their variety. With charming visuals and a leisurely pace that emphasizes patience and presence of mind, Flock offers a relaxing romp where players join the vibrant menagerie rather than command it.

Yet for all its easygoing charms, Flock does not lack for surprises. Hidden among its pleasant pastures lie puzzles that will test even the most eagle-eyed of explorers.

Observing Nature’s Wonders

Soaring above the Uplands is where the real magic of Flock begins. You glide atop your trusty hover-sheep, guided not by buttons but by a gentle pull of momentum—it’s as smooth as a dandelion seed drifting on a breeze.

This seamless flow is core to Flock’s relaxed rhythms, letting players simply uncover each region’s riches at their leisure. Each landscape invites wandering without particular aim, from sun-drenched meadows bursting with hidden life to mossy glens keeping their mysteries till dusk.

Yet Flock offers guidance for the curious. Your field guide cues discoveries like a nature trail’s signs, suggesting where certain species may be sighted. Some require keen eyes, emerging solely at dusk or amid specific forest types. Others leave unique tracks to follow or fill the air with melodic calls, drawing you their way. Each encounter poses a fun challenge too—can you pick the Yellowlegs Drupe from its cousins? Learning identifiers like coloring or silhouettes makes spotting more elusive creatures a joy.

Once observed, Flock’s charms can draw creatures to join your parade. Simple rhythm games reward patience, letting players share moments of nature’s calm with new friends. Their antics never cease to delight, whether flying in formation or flocking to your side. Optional co-op lets whole groups appreciate The Uplands’ tranquil splendors together, making discoveries all the more sweet. Clearing clouds too uncovers additional charms to uncover in Flock’s agreeably small world.

While instructions could be clearer and regathering errant sheep vexing, such niggles do little to diminish the sincere wonder within Flock’s tranquil shores. It celebrates observation without pressure or rankings, simply sharing nature’s inclusiveness and serene ability to lift our spirits with its loveliness each season.

Birdwatching in the Golden Light

The brightly colored world of Flock is a delight to explore. From the soft pinks and purples of sunrise to the golden glow of evening, the changing light bathes the landscapes in a warm, painterly radiance. Within these vivacious environments lives a menagerie of imaginative creatures so peculiar and charming you may forget at times you’re on a mission of discovery.

Flock Review

Each area, from the expansive grasslands to the misty boglands, feels alive with hidden wonders. Tall, waving grass conceals napping beasts, while gnarled trees shelter nocturnal neighbors only seen by moonlight. Crumbled concrete barriers showcase murals left by past inhabitants, speaking to lives once lived here, though now reclaimed by nature. Inviting yet unfathomable, this wild world begs curiosity.

Over 60 diverse species are found across these environs, grouped into distinctive clans with traits all their own. Bouncing bewls parade in rolling herds while solitary skyfish zip between cloudbanks. Firefly-like thrips glow as dusk emerges, and mushroom-capped drupes laze amongst the woodland blooms. Designed with imagination and heart, no two appearances or behaviors are quite alike.

Finding all is part of the of the task, more so an adventure of patience. While common residents are easy sights, rarer creatures require keen eyes and open minds to spot discreet signs pointing towards discovery. Strange cries in the breeze or oily stains along barks provide clues to companions most clever at concealment. Following faint hints with an observant spirit brings new friends as rewards; each encounters a moment of joy.

Charting this idyllic domain and befriending its quirky inhabitants becomes an experience to savor slowly, catching life’s fleeting beauty wherever it appears. By living curiously in the present, rare delights are sure to find you in kind.

Window to Wonder

The Uplands come alive through Jane’s invitation to learn. Her gentle guidance opens our eyes to life unfolding everywhere, from bewl calls rippling across meadows to drupes dancing with the dusk. Colorful characters greet us along the way, sharing moments that teach without preaching.

Flock Review

Conversations feel like sitting with a friend in the dappled shade, learning from stories as much as words. Puzzle pieces click together from fragments that don’t fit any rules but their own. Laughter and sighs mingle freely without fear of judgment.

Descriptions paint each new scene in vivid yet tranquil brush strokes. We drift amid blossoms blooming and birds gliding on unseen winds, soaking in nature’s rhythms too subtle for haste. Hidden wonders allure patient eyes to see beyond surface marvels, finding fresh magic in each shadow and streak of light.

Depth flows within simplicity’s quiet waters. Childlike joy walks hand in hand with pondering for all ages. Inviting us to wonder is invitation enough; without demand, we comprehend. The journey warms more than destinations, as a window opens onto worlds within which ripple endlessly.

Exploring New Worlds at Your Own Pace

Flock offers an inviting world to discover at your leisure. There’s no rush as you glide across the colorful landscapes, spotting creatures in their natural habitats. The game gently encourages observation rather than competition, allowing everyone to appreciate nature’s quiet wonders.

Flock Review

Players fill a field guide by learning each species’ identifying traits, but everyone progresses at their own rate. There’s no right or wrong answer—only new sights await your notice. Charming Animals follows a brief and lighthearted minigame with no penalty for mistakes. Anyone can draw fascinating flocks over time.

Patience yields many rewards. Some creatures nest or hunt only under certain conditions. Remaining still and watching brings new details into focus. Flock shows the richness all around us, however subtly, for those willing to look. These relaxing qualities create a stress-free setting for all ages and skills to share in the magic together.

Whether playing solo or with companions, the experience soothes the mind and spirit. Vibrant landscapes invite simple enjoyment of flowing colors and calls across the hills and forests. Quests provide just enough purpose without pressure. Flock invites slowing down to appreciate life’s small wonders wherever you find them, in a world that embraces curiosity and calm.

Exploring New Heights

While Flock provides a relaxing romp, some elements could take flight even higher. Instructions aren’t always clear, leaving players unsure of their paths at times. The charming process grows repetitive too, lessening the thrill for recruits.

Flock Review

Yet bigger jumps await. Flock hints at grandeur through its vistas but hovers where it could hover higher. If players could dip and dive among peaks as freely as flocks in nature, new areas may open like unfolding wings. Customization holds notes untapped as well. With flocks trailing in players’ wake, more costume choices could let character voices sing.

None of this takes away from Flock’s charm. It works wonders within its world, captivating with its very way of being. But by soaring on its own terms, might it not glimpse ever higher sights? Instructions strengthening direction, charms expanding their song, customization letting personalities take flight—each upgrade could lift the experience to brighter skies. And doors unlocked by true flight might fill the uplands with fresh friends still awaiting discovery.

The potential here floats just beyond grasp. With care taken to honor what makes Flock soar so smoothly now, future adventures could navigate new air currents. By opening avenues while keeping pathways clear, taller heights and broader horizons could emerge organic as the landscapes themselves, carrying the warmth of this experience to buoy even more hearts with its effortless buoyancy.

Discovery in Flight

Flock embodies the simple joy of discovery. Through its vibrant world and thoughtful design, the game creates an atmosphere of relaxed exploration that appeals to curiosity of all ages.

Flock Review

Players are invited to immerse themselves in a living landscape where colorful creatures inhabit trees and skies according to their own rhythms. Rather than capturing prizes, the goal is to fill out a field guide through patient observation. Some will reveal themselves easily, while hidden specifics remain a delight to uncover.

Developer Richard Hogg brings a consistent creative vision, whether guiding sinuous journeys in Hohokum or inviting quiet study of I Am Dead’s details. In Flock, his exploration of movement’s momentum sees flight become a breezy means to freely roam among winding trails and distant vistas. Suspended discoveries are their own reward.

For those seeking temporary escape, Flock offers a place of wandering beauty that requires only openness of mind. Its inhabitants live freely, and we join them not as masters but as kin. When the world feels fast or harsh, its gentle charms welcome all to slow down, look up, and find reassurance in small wonders. Some will linger after only to keep its soothing company and find that nature’s gifts gently support us wherever our next discovery may lead.
