We join documentary filmmaker Maureen Castle Tusty on an inspirational global journey. Her latest film “She Rises Up” introduces us to three courageous women tackling poverty through entrepreneurship in their home countries. Magatte from Senegal, Gladys in Peru, and Selyna from Sri Lanka each strive to lift their communities and empower others through small business.

Despite facing social and financial obstacles, these determined women found ways to turn their talents into opportunities. Magatte started a cosmetics company celebrating her culture. Running mini-markets, Gladys provides jobs and independence. And Selyna’s textile efforts boost income and dignity. Through energizing stories and songs, Tusty celebrates their resilience and the global impact women can have when supported to succeed.

Taking us from markets and factories to stores and homes, “She Rises Up” highlights grassroots solutions with international significance. Produced by Maureen Tusty’s New York-based company Milkhaus Pictures, the film reminds us that empowering voices from around the world, when joined together, can inspire lasting change one entrepreneur at a time.

Empowering Entrepreneurs

The film introduces us to three remarkable women working to lift their communities through small business. Selyna oversees a textile operation in Sri Lanka. Facing obstacles as a female executive, she found solutions like flexible hours to support working mothers. She also helped address “period poverty” through reusable pads, empowering many.

In Senegal, Magatte started a cosmetics company. With women often denied jobs, she provided an opportunity to celebrate local traditions. Yet global corporations threatened traditional markets. Still, her spirit shows what’s possible.

We meet Gladys running mini-markets in Peru. Coming from a home with an absent father, she wanted independence and set an example through her growing business. But challenges remain after damage from past violence. With cultural activities, she aims to rebuild confidence.

All face adversity with determination. Selyna navigates social biases while expanding her mother’s legacy. Magatte stands against laws barring women and unfair pressure on small operations. And Gladys heals communities through jobs and connection and points to a hopeful future. Their stories illustrate how resilient women, when granted a chance, can transform lives through their gifts and drive.

Their journeys remind us that within each setting, from bustling cities to rural villages, untapped gifts wait to blossom. When women grasp opportunity by the wings rather than shackles, communities take flight in turn. Through small steps and shared song, poverty loses power as connections gain.

In facing injustice, embracing culture, and working as one, a brighter future comes into focus. And as these entrepreneurs prove—where community and creativity meet, nothing remains impossible.
