A new Peacock limited series called “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist” aims to bring to life the infamous robbery that occurred in Atlanta on October 26, 1970. On that night, as boxing legend Muhammad Ali prepared for a highly anticipated comeback fight, a group of armed men unexpectedly stormed an after-party and stole over $1 million from organized crime figures in attendance.
The eight-episode show features an impressive ensemble cast led by comedian Kevin Hart in the role of Gordon “Chicken Man” Williams. Williams was a numbers runner in Atlanta at the time who found himself at the center of the notorious robbery. Hart’s costars include Samuel L. Jackson as New York crime boss Frank Moten and Terrence Howard as New Jersey kingpin Cadillac Richie, both victims of the real-life heist.
The series is created and written by Shaye Ogbonna, known for her work on the drama series “The Chi.” It uses the million dollar robbery as a backdrop to explore Atlanta’s transition in the 1970s from a small Southern town into a major city with growing Black wealth and influence. Against this backdrop, Williams seizes an opportunity presented by Moten and other organized crime figures visiting for Ali’s fight to try elevating his criminal status.
In addition to dramatizing the robbery and its aftermath, the series also features a parallel storyline depicting Atlanta’s first Black detective lieutenant, J.D. Hudson, played by Don Cheadle. Hudson is tasked with protecting Ali ahead of his fight but finds himself dealing with issues of racial tension and change as the city evolves rapidly around him in those transformative years.
While fictionized, creator Ogbonna aimed to balance entertainment with some accurate historical context. Contemporary reports valued the robbery’s total loot around $1 million, though the true amount remains uncertain due to victims’ desire to avoid police involvement. The stellar cast and multiple storylines will ensure the series generates buzz when it debuts later this week on the Peacock streaming service.
