Man, those Rugrats sure know how to stir up trouble, don’t they? For real though, I can’t believe it’s been over twenty years since I was glued to the TV every Saturday morning’, hangin’ on Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, and Lil’s every adventure. It seems like just yesterday they were teachin’ this kid life lessons through hilarious hijinks, even if some parts did give me nightmares thanks to Angelica’s schemes!

Anyway, it’s wild to think this lovable bunch of babbling babies is still captivating’ kids today. And it ain’t just new generations discovering’ the show—no way, we original fans still get a kick out of these rugrats too. Maybe it’s their bold imagination or the deeper themes hidden under all the poop jokes, but somehow Rugrats just clicks with folks of all ages.

Now it’s time to relive—or experience for the first time—those wacky worlds of Rugrats like never before. In Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland, our favorite fearless foursome (plus a few others) star in an all new 2D platformer adventure. Hitting Switch, PC, and other systems, you get to choose between Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, or Lil, then scour each wild stage, from the backyard to grandpa’s attic, for enough special Reptar coins to unlock what’s behind the TV. With cel-shaded graphics that’ll transport you right back to the show, plus a totally rad 8-bit mode, this love letter to our babblin’ BFFs is bound to be a blast from the past.

So hop on board, strap into your high chair, and get ready for a diaper-load of fun relivin’—or d discoverin’ for the first time—the hilarious hijinks that made Rugrats a cartoon classic. I gotta hunch playin’ Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland is going to be a real gas!

Taking Control of the Rugrats

Alright y’all, it’s time to wrangle these rascally Rugrats and see what hijinks we can stir up! In Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland, you get to choose who you’ll be leading’ the charge as—will it be courageous Tommy? Nervous Nellie Chuckie? Strongman Phil? Or floaty Lil? Each baby’s got their own unique skills to consider too.

Tommy’s your standard all-rounder, like ol’ reliable Mario, while Chuckie can soar higher than the others thanks to being’ the tallest. Phil’s got some muscle behind his jumps for lifting’ heavier objects. And Lil ain’t just cute as a button; she can flutter through the air like Princess Peach herself! Figurin’ out each rugrat’s strengths and switchin’ between ’em is crucial for success.

The basics are simple enough—you’ll be trottin’ around, stompin’ enemies, and liftin’ blocks to reach new areas. But some levels ramp up the challenge by throwin’ climbin’ and tricky platformin’ your way. And the baddies like Cynthia’s magic head ain’t no joke either! You’ll need to use everything in your (nonexistent) diaper to outsmart ’em.

Speakin’ of levels, each area transforms the Pickles’ pad into a wild new world thanks to a kid’s imagination. The sandbox erupts into a treacherous desert, the fridge warps into an industrial maze—it’s a blast! Collectin’ coins and findin’ keys lets you take down the boss at the end too.

You can tackle the stages solo or join a friend in co-op fun. Just be careful those bugs don’t ruin the party! With lots of love for the source material and replay value through multiple difficulties, these babies are worth wrangling’ time and time again!

Blast from the Past

Ya know, for a game based on a cartoon from way back when, Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland sure nails the old-school aesthetic. Between the cel-shaded visuals lookin’ just like the show and a totally rad retro mode, this one had me feelin’ like a kid again.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland Review

In “HD,”  it’s like Tommy, Chuckie, and the gang stepped right out of the TV! Their movements are as smooth as silk too. And holy moly, the backdrops aren’t just pretty—that kitchen’s got me thinkin’ OSHA would have a field day.

But where this game really floored me was when I slapped ‘er into 8-bit. Suddenly everything’s got fewer pixels than grandma’s old photo albums! The graphics take on this super authentic NES style, complete with graphics stutter that’s almost nostalgic. And get this—some company’s even portin’ it to an actual cartridge!

The tunes are just as slick as the visuals too. Whether you’re boppin’ along to the modern version of the theme song or gettin’ your chiptune fix, each level’s a whole other musical masterpiece. It’s crazy how they crammed so many different sounds out of the NES!

Honestly, it’s such a thrill seeing’ the ugrats. Brought to life like this after all these years. The developers nailed clingin’ to the source material while also giving’ us totally dope retro options us old-timers can drool over. When the graphics and music come together so well, it’s like the perfect storm to transport me straight back to the best Saturday mornings.

Exploring the infinite possibilities of a kid’s imagination

You gotta hand it to the Rugrats—those babies sure know how to dream up an adventure, don’t they? In Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland, each level transports you to a whole new magical world spinnin’ inside their curious little minds.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland Review

The sandbox becomes a sprawlin’ desert full of shakin’ ground and sneak attacks from sidewindin’ snakes. I mean, have you ever really looked at a sandbox? It’s hilarious how much these kids can envision within something so simple.

Meanwhile, the industrial whirring and clangs of the kitchen transform it into some steampunk maze rising from the deepest depths of Thomas Edison’s lab. Traps lurk round every tile as the fridge swallows you into its mechanical belly.

The backyard barbecue becomes a hollowed tree more complex than the dendrochronological society’s wettest dreams, with picnic ants stomped into wind-up warriors. Just try scaling that sapling without boppin’ a few on the nose!

Each area bustles with hidden nooks worth uncoverin’, whether it’s extra lives stashed underfoot or keys unlocking new trails. Completin’ ’em all means thinkin’ outside the box—or should I say playpen. These nippers may be tiny, but their imaginations are infinite!

Of course, danger lurks around every corner. Cynthia’s disembodied head continues haunting my nightmares, while projectile pellets fly thick as the mosquitoes at a Louisiana summer cookout. Tackling’ these tricksters and their bosses at the end of each level tests even the craftiest strategies.

With so many clever concepts springin’ from such mundane settings, these guys out-create Steven Spielberg on his best day. So c’mon and fuel your inner baby—the wide-eyed wonderland that is Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland awaits! Its levels will spark ideas in even the drabbest dreamer.

Wranglin’ the Rascals in a Rubber World

You ever try herdin’ cats? Well, piloting these pesky pickles through Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland, let me tell you, it ain’t no walk in the park either. While the basic boppin’ and trottin’ is passable, things get hairy once tricky platformin’ and combat come into play.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland Review

See, when you’re climbing’ precarious perches or duking it out, those supposedly “responsive” controls start feelin’ downright slippery. Jumps don’t clench when you need ’em most, and mashin’ buttons turn into a frantic fumble more often than not.

Then you got the enemy placement to contend with! Talk about screen peekers—some just chill waitingin’ to cheap-shot you the second a scene transitions. And glitch me to Greendale; the way they swarm like flies on a ripe carcass makes spacing out attacks next to impossible.

To top it off, those checkpoints are stingier than Scrooge McDuck! One slip and you’re sent back to the start of an area, even if it was just a pixel ago. So prepare for ample agony re-tackling’ sections you’ve already mastered numerous times just to get back to where you slipped.

It’s a dang shame too, because underneath the jank there’s hints of a solid platformer cryin’ to bust out. With tighter response and fairer foe placement, this rubber world might’ve been a dreamier stroll. As is, it’s a wobbly ride more stressful than a diaper disaster.

A Nostalgia-Fuelled Romp Down Console Lane

Say, this Rugrats romp sure is a trip down memory lane – and not just for fans of the show! Whether you’re a cart-munchin’ kid or a newbie baby, Adventures in Gameland hits all the right notes to put a smile on your mug.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland Review

It lovingly lifts the best bits from classics like Super Mario Bros. 2 and Mega Man, letting enemies soar and changing pros between characters. Yet this homage feels heartfelt rather than half-baked. The babies deliver a distinct experience all their own!

Compared to shoddier movie and TV tie-ins back in the day, Adventures in Gameland proves retro-inspired titles can stand proud amongst modern greats. Its HD and 8-bit coats not only stun, they tailor nostalgia for all ages. Graphics that honor both eras? Now that’s innovation!

While it lacks groundbreaking ideas, Adventures in Gameland sparkles by capturing childhood magic – be it memories of Rugrats antics or weekend mornings spent glued to your NES. Through sheer heart and charm, it triumphs where so many others have crawled away in tears!

So whether you’re looking for a retro rocket or just wanna relive preschool shenanigans, this is one journey guaranteed to tug your heartstrings. Nostalgia was never this feel-good fun!

Blast to the Past with the Rugrats Gang

Man, what a trip down memory lane with the Rugrats crew! While Adventures in Gameland definitely ain’t no work of art, it sure did put a smile on my mug reliving those classic cartoon hijinks.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland Review

Now don’t get me wrong, some parts could use some spit-shining. Those janky joints and punishing puzzles got me seein’ red more than Angelica. Plus, those co-op conundrums aren’t doing any favors.

But you know what? Underneath the wrinkles, a charming title shines through with its heart-swelling homages. And dat 8-bit mode—sheer nostalgia gold that’ll turn even the sourdiest grownup’s frown upside down.

At the end of the day, Rugrats newbies and old fans alike are bound to get a kick outta its playgrounds spinnin’ from the minds of mischievous moppets. It truly captures the magic that made the show a slam-dunk satellite sensation all those years ago.

So while it ain’t for platforming aficionados, Adventure in Gameland’s a really worthwhile romp down memory lane. Here’s hoping’ future visits with these rascals get even more polished—I’m always game for more playtime with my preschool pals!

The Review

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland

7 Score

While Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland has its faults, it succeeds in its most important goal—capturing the charm and whimsy of the classic cartoon. Underneath the rough edges, a heartwarming work of nostalgia shines through with its imaginative worlds and pitch-perfect homages to the show. It stands as a tribute to the magic of childhood that made Rugrats a phenomenon. Rugrats fans both old and new can find enjoyment in rediscovering these beloved characters, though more technically-minded players may grow frustrated by gameplay shortcomings. Overall, it takes me back to simpler times and puts a smile on my face.

PROS

  • Captures the look, feel, and humor of the Rugrats cartoon perfectly
  • Nostalgic implementations of both HD and 8-bit visual styles
  • Accurate soundtrack available in both modern and retro options
  • Unique level designs that build upon the source material creatively
  • Swapping between the four playable babies adds strategic variety

CONS

  • Controls can feel imprecise, especially during combat/platforming
  • Checkpoint placement and frequent enemy spawning grow frustrating
  • Bugs and performance issues significantly impact co-op enjoyment
  • Gameplay lacks depth compared to genre classics it draws inspiration from
  • Short length doesn't justify the price point for some players
