The highly anticipated sequel to the Oscar-winning 2000 film Gladiator will debut as part of the Royal Film Performance in London this November. Ridley Scott returns to direct Gladiator II, continuing the story of ancient Rome that captivated audiences worldwide.
The Royal Film Performance is a century-old fundraiser for the Film and TV Charity, an organization providing mental health services and financial assistance to professionals in the United Kingdom’s cinema industry. This year’s November 13 screening will feature Gladiator II, with footage shown simultaneously at 30 regional premieres across the UK.
Ridley Scott expressed excitement to finally answer fans’ long-awaited question of whether a sequel was possible. “Ever since making Gladiator, I’ve considered how to continue Maximus’ story,” Scott said. The film follows a new character, Lucius, played by Paul Mescal, as he grapples with the legacy of Russell Crowe’s famous general-turned-gladiator from the original.
Also starring are Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Denzel Washington, with Connie Nielsen returning from the first film. The premiere will take place on London’s red carpet, with wider accessibility for audiences through the regional premieres tied to the main event.
The Film and TV Charity supports an important cause, as the past year increased mental health and financial struggles for many in the UK cinema community. CEO Marcus Ryder called the Gladiator II screening “a chance to both showcase great filmmaking and raise funds for our beneficiaries facing challenges.”
John Fletcher, head of Paramount Pictures UK, said the studio appreciates the honor of the Royal Film Performance selection. Gladiator II continues a tradition dating back 100 years and aims to make a significant cultural impact with its November theatrical debut.
