Renowned filmmaker Paul Schrader has expressed doubts about the “Joker” sequel “Joker: Folie à Deux.” In an interview with Jeremy O. Harris from Interview Magazine, Schrader shared that he could not finish watching the entire musical film.
Schrader, known for classics such as “Taxi Driver,” saw only brief segments of the movie totaling around 20 minutes before leaving the theater. Based on the portions he viewed, Schrader formed a negative view of the production. When asked his thoughts about the musical elements, Schrader labeled it a “really bad musical.”
The director also voiced displeasure with the performances from Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in their leading roles. Schrader stated “I don’t like either of those people. I don’t like them as actors. I don’t like them as characters.” He offered a particularly cutting remark that the characters were ones “if they came to your house, you’d slip out the back door.”
Schrader’s harsh critique comes at a time when “Joker: Folie à Deux” faces challenges meeting financial expectations. Despite its A-list cast and large $200 million budget, the film has only grossed $165.3 million globally so far in its second weekend. Industry analysts project significant losses for Warner Bros., with estimates the movie could lose $150-200 million during its theatrical run.
Reviews of the sequel have been mixed overall. While some praise its bold reimagining of the characters, Schrader’s prominent negative opinion as an influential filmmaker adds weight to concerns about the film’s ultimate success and acclaim. As debate continues, Schrader is focused on new directing projects scheduled for later this year and beyond.
