Superman & Lois Kills off Hero in Season Premiere

The CW's superhero drama takes a shocking turn as it begins its farewell run

The CW series “Superman & Lois” shook up fans in its season premiere by killing off the titular character. In a bold narrative choice that pays homage to comic book history, the show depicts Clark Kent/Superman finally losing his battle against the monster Doomsday.

The season opener credits Doomsday for Superman’s death after their fight extended from last season’s cliffhanger. However, the damage does not stop there. A mutant clone of Superman named Bizarro retrieves the deceased hero’s heart and gives it to nemesis Lex Luthor. Viewers then watch as Luthor deliberately destroys the heart, eliminating any easy path to resurrection.

Showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher have been considering this storyline for a while. As Helbing explains, “We wanted to take inspiration from the iconic ‘Death of Superman’ comics run and put our own spin on it for the show.” Fletcher adds they intend to fully explore the emotional fallout: “If he’s gone, we need to feel that loss and not bring him back hastily.”

The focus now shifts to how Lois Lane, Jordan Kent and Jon Kent will cope without Clark. Adding complexity, the family discovers a hologram message Clark prepared as backup. Meanwhile, Luthor poses a new threat since learning of Superman’s son’s identity.

Helbing teases other season plots, like Luthor searching for his daughter and the town’s political conflict. But the showrunners remain tight-lipped on if and how Superman could eventually return. As Fletcher insists, any resurrection will be “an elaborate, emotional journey” rather than a simple fix.

Viewers can expect an emotionally-charged final season of “Superman & Lois” as the show explores life without its hero while potentially building to a climactic comeback.
