The iconic claymation characters Wallace and Gromit are set to make their comeback with an upcoming feature film. Titled “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl,” the movie from Aardman Animations promises to blend technical improvements with the heartwarming tales that fans love.
Executive producer Carla Shelley says audiences can expect strong emotions in the new story. She told an event that “I think we’re going to make everybody cry. We’re going to surprise everybody and make you laugh as well. It’s really emotional. That’s what’s at the heart of it.” The movie continues themes about technology that resonate today, according to co-director Nick Park. He explained that Wallace means well but sometimes gets too focused on his inventions, similar to how people love tech but it can hurt relationships.
In the film, Wallace’s latest creation – a smart garden gnome named Norbot – threatens his friendship with Gromit. The plot also brings back the villainous penguin Feathers McGraw from a 1993 short. Co-director Merlin Crossingham called Feathers the “perfect candidate” to drive the story, since he’s spent 30 years in prison dreaming only of vengeance.
While advanced techniques bring the characters to life, traditional stop-motion remains at the core. Crossingham said “The heart and soul of it hasn’t changed at all. The technique is exactly the same as it always was.” However, effects like realistically animated water and smoke are now possible using virtual tools embedded carefully into the animation world. Crossingham added the movie also subtly improves the puppets through materials allowing their flexible yet distinctive looks.
Set to debut this winter on TV and streaming services, “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” promises loyal fans a heartwarming adventure that pushes animation boundaries while honoring the duo’s roots. Aardman’s crew aims to craft a story entertaining audiences both young and old.
