The hit HBO drama series “Euphoria” will jump ahead significantly in time for its third season, according to statements from actress Zendaya. The upcoming installment of the show will move the story beyond the high school setting that was central in previous seasons.
Zendaya, who plays the lead role of Rue and also serves as an executive producer, explained the decision to skip ahead was because viewers can only watch “so much high school drama.” She said the time jump will make the new season “fascinating” by showing “how all the stuff that we saw when they were kids and they were in high school affects the adulthood they have and who they become.”
The cast will have the challenge of revisiting their roles after a substantial period of time away from the show. Actress Sydney Sweeney, who plays Cassie, told Cosmopolitan the time jump means learning her character again from the beginning. While specific plot details are still unknown, Zendaya believes the third season will explore how the characters’ lives develop outside of high school.
Although some faces will be missing, like Barbie Ferreira who has departed the series, most main cast members like Zendaya, Sweeney, Hunter Schafer, Jacob Elordi, Alexa Demie and Maude Apatow are expected to return. Tragically, Angus Cloud passed away from an accidental drug overdose in July 2023 and will be missed. For creator Sam Levinson, the new season presents maintaining the show’s intensity while adapting to the characters’ transition into adulthood. Production is scheduled to start in early 2025.
