Reneé Rapp, an actress and musician, is leaving her breakthrough role as Leighton Murray in HBO Max’s comedy series The Sex Lives of College Girls. Her character’s emotional farewell takes place in the second episode of Season 3, marking a watershed moment for both the show and its loyal fans.

In her last tale, Leighton moves from Essex College to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The relocation allows her to pursue her interest in advanced mathematics while reuniting with her partner, Alicia, who has started a new job in Boston. This well-designed exit celebrates Leighton’s personal development and self-acceptance.

Co-showrunner Justin Noble addressed Leighton’s departure, citing it as the natural conclusion of her character development. Leighton Murray has never lost or relinquished anything in her life. So the only way she’d quit is if it was a clear victory for herself,” Noble told Variety. The decision shows Leighton’s transition from a closed-off, wealthy legacy student to a confident young woman who embraces her identity.

Rapp initially regarded acting as a stepping stone to a music career and admits that her time on the show influenced her in unanticipated ways. “I thought I could do music on the side, like, I can just hustle,” Rapp explained in an interview with Variety. “And now I’ve just kept acting because it keeps supporting the music.” In a touching post on X (previously Twitter), she described how playing Leighton had a huge impact on her life. “Playing Leighton transformed my life. Rapp remarked, “I love who I am ten times more than I did before knowing her.”

Leighton’s choice to transfer arises from her awareness that Essex’s math department does not satisfy her academic objectives. The move also signifies a new beginning with Alicia, solidifying their relationship after previous struggles. This subplot connects Leighton’s academic motivation, personal relationships, and self-discovery, all of which have played important roles in the show’s narrative.

A beautiful sequence with Leighton’s suitemates—Whitney, Kimberly, and Bela—features the emotional parting. The four friends spend one last night together, highlighting the strong relationships they’ve established since the series began. These friendships have been a cornerstone of The Sex Lives of College Girls and struck a deep chord with viewers.

While fans may be disappointed by Rapp’s departure, Leighton’s character’s departure satisfactorily concludes her story. The Sex Lives of College Girls airs new episodes every Thursday at 9 p.m. EST on Max.
