Blue Finch Films Acquires Global Rights to Groundbreaking Australian Animation ‘Lesbian Space Princess’

Blue Finch Films, a UK business, has bought the worldwide sales rights to the highly anticipated Australian animated movie Lesbian Space Princess. This deal eliminates the Australian and New Zealand markets. The movie will be first shown at the important Panorama part of the Berlin Film Festival next month.

“Lesbian Space Princess” is the first film directed by Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese. The film especially mixes science fiction and comedy. The story is about a princess who lives in a protected area. She journeys through space to save her former girlfriend, a bounty hunter, from a group called the Straight White Maliens. The film has been praised for showcasing gay women of color strongly and prominently.

The project started from FilmLab: New Voices, a program supported by the South Australian Film Corporation, the Adelaide Film Festival, and Screen Australia. This program helps new artists from South Australia by giving them a chance to show their creative work.

The production team has director Tom Phillips from We Made a Thing Studios and executive producers Ari Harrison from Umbrella Entertainment and Cam Rogers. Umbrella Entertainment has obtained the rights to distribute in Australia and New Zealand.

Directors Hough, Hobbs, and Varghese thanked Umbrella and Blue Finch for supporting their project, saying, “We are very thankful for your belief in us.” Our amazing cast and team poured so much love and hard work into this project, and we can’t wait for it to premiere on the big screen at Berlinale.”

The film has created a buzz in the industry after being shown as a Work-in-Progress at the Adelaide Film Festival. Mike Chapman, managing director of Blue Finch Films, called the project “an utter joy—not only side-splittingly hilarious but also immensely heart-warming.”

This buy improves Blue Finch’s varied collection, which features the horror movie “825 Forest Road,” the Sitges festival winner “Zero” by Jean Luc Herbulot, and the Indonesian horror film “The Draft!” shown at Fantastic Fest.

Blue Finch Films will start selling “Lesbian Space Princess” internationally at the European Film Market, which will take place at the same time as the Berlin Film Festival.
