Discussions about The Real Housewives franchise have taken a turn after the recent arrest of Karen Huger from The Real Housewives of Potomac. Following the news, TV writer Gary Janetti posted a satirical suggestion online: “Can’t they put all the Housewives serving time in the same prison and just do a show from there?” Andy Cohen, who oversees the franchise, responded, “Too soon, Gary.”
Huger, 61, was arrested in March 2024 after crashing her Maserati. Authorities charged her with driving under the influence. This incident adds her to a growing list of Real Housewives stars who have faced legal trouble.
Teresa Giudice of The Real Housewives of New Jersey served nearly a year in prison after pleading guilty to multiple fraud charges in 2014. Her sentencing and release were documented on the show, including an emotional reunion with her family.
Jen Shah from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City is currently serving a six-and-a-half-year sentence at Bryan Federal Prison Camp in Texas for her role in a telemarketing fraud scheme. Her sentence has been reduced, with an expected release in November 2026.
Other cast members have been arrested but avoided extended time behind bars. Luann de Lesseps of The Real Housewives of New York City was arrested in 2017 for disorderly intoxication and resisting arrest but completed a court-ordered treatment program instead of serving jail time. Porsha Williams of The Real Housewives of Atlanta was arrested during a 2020 protest over Breonna Taylor’s death but had her charges dropped.
DUI charges have also been common among cast members. Shannon Beador, Sonja Morgan, and Gina Kirschenheiter have all been arrested for driving under the influence at different points in their time on the show.
Lisa Rinna reacted to Janetti’s post with “GARY,” while Kathy Wakile of The Real Housewives of New Jersey responded with “Omg?” Fans have continued to speculate about the possibility of a legal-themed Real Housewives spinoff, but Cohen has dismissed the idea.
