Disney+ has announced an early renewal for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, confirming a third season before the second season has aired. The decision reflects confidence in the adaptation of Rick Riordan’s book series, which has been one of the most successful original shows on the streaming platform.
Season 2, which wrapped production in January, is scheduled to premiere in December, two years after the first season debuted. The renewal of Season 3 allows the creative team to continue developing the series without major delays, an approach that co-showrunner Jonathan E. Steinberg has emphasized as a priority.
“Part of wanting to keep the process going is trying to do whatever we can to be ready for it and to know how to have the conversations and to have a plan,” Steinberg said in a recent interview.
The upcoming third season will be based on The Titan’s Curse, the third book in Riordan’s Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. Among the anticipated additions is Nico di Angelo, a character highly regarded by fans, along with the introduction of the Hunters of Artemis.
“We’re so grateful to be continuing the story of Percy Jackson on Disney+,” Riordan said in a statement. “This third season will be new territory for the screen, bringing fan favorites like the Hunters of Artemis and Nico di Angelo to life for the first time. It’s a huge sign of commitment from Disney, and speaks volumes about the enthusiasm with which the fandom has embraced the TV show. Thank you, demigods worldwide!”
The first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians premiered in December 2023 and became one of Disney+’s most-watched series, ranking among the top five on the platform. According to Nielsen ratings, the series outperformed all other Disney+ originals outside of the Marvel and Star Wars franchises in terms of viewing time. The show also saw significant social media engagement, with over a billion views on TikTok under the hashtag #PercyJackson.
The series has also earned critical recognition, receiving 16 nominations at the Children’s and Family Emmy Awards. The ceremony, set to take place this weekend, may further establish the show’s status on Disney+.
Season 2 will feature returning cast members Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri, Charlie Bushnell, Dior Goodjohn, and Daniel Diemer. New additions to the ensemble include Tamara Smart, Andra Day, Sandra Bernhard, Kristen Schaal, Margaret Cho, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Aleks Paunovic. Courtney B. Vance will portray Zeus, stepping into the role originally played by the late Lance Reddick.
The series is executive produced by Riordan and Steinberg, alongside Dan Shotz, Rebecca Riordan, Craig Silverstein, Bert Salke, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, D.J. Goldberg, James Bobin, Jim Rowe, Albert Kim, Jason Ensler, and Sarah Watson.
