Apple TV+ has ended Mythic Quest after four seasons. The final episode of the workplace comedy aired on March 26 but will now be re-released with an updated ending. The revised version will be available next week on the platform.
The creators of the series — Megan Ganz, David Hornsby, and Rob McElhenney — confirmed the cancellation and shared a statement acknowledging the decision and the final update. “Endings are hard. But after four incredible seasons, Mythic Quest is coming to a close,” the team said. “We’re so proud of the show and the world we got to build — and deeply grateful to every cast and crew member who poured their heart into it.
To all our fans, thank you for playing with us. To our partners at Apple, thank you for believing in the vision from the very beginning. Because endings are hard, with Apple’s blessing we made one final update to our last episode — so we could say goodbye, instead of just game over.”
Mythic Quest debuted in February 2020 and was one of the first scripted comedies developed for Apple’s streaming platform, which launched in November 2019. The show was renewed for its third and fourth seasons in 2021. Season 4 premiered in January and concluded in late March.
The series follows a team of developers at a fictional video game studio responsible for the in-universe title Mythic Quest, a popular MMORPG. McElhenney starred as Ian Grimm, the studio’s creator and creative lead. The cast includes Charlotte Nicdao, Hornsby, Danny Pudi, Ashly Burch, Imani Hakim, Jessie Ennis, and Naomi Ekperigin. F. Murray Abraham appeared in the early seasons.
Season 4 continued the ensemble format, returning many core cast members to the same office setting. Storylines included personal and professional developments as the studio responded to changes within the industry. Shifting alliances, evolving ambitions, and workplace dynamics shaped much of the season’s structure.
While Apple does not disclose viewership numbers for its original programming, the show received strong reviews across its run. Each season was noted for its tone, pacing, and depiction of office culture through the lens of game development.
The series was created by McElhenney, Charlie Day, and Ganz. McElhenney and Day executive produced under their RCG banner. Other executive producers include Hornsby, Michael Rotenberg, Nicholas Frenkel, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill, and Gérard Guillemot. Production was handled by Lionsgate Television, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Ubisoft Film & Television.
Two special episodes were also produced outside of the main seasons. One was filmed remotely and depicted the characters during the early months of quarantine. The other, titled “Everlight,” focused on the characters’ return to the office and was set during an in-universe holiday.
In addition to the main show, Apple released a four-episode anthology titled Side Quest, which premiered the same day as the Season 4 finale. The spinoff centers on different figures affected by the Mythic Quest game, including developers, players, and fans. The anthology features McElhenney alongside Anna Konkle, Derek Waters, Rome Flynn, Leonard Robinson, Bria Samoné Henderson, and others.
No specific reason for the cancellation has been provided, though the show’s lower promotional profile during Season 4 may have contributed to the decision. Changes in platform priorities and scheduling across the streaming market have resulted in similar moves for other series.
The updated final episode was developed after the original Season 4 finale had already aired. While it was not originally written as a series conclusion, the team worked with Apple to make adjustments that would allow the show to close its run with intention.
