Gary Sinise stepped back from on-screen work in 2020 when his son Mac received a chordoma diagnosis, a rare bone cancer affecting about 300 people in the U.S. each year. Best known for playing Lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump and leading CSI: NY across nine seasons, Sinise left projects including Joe Bell, I Still Believe and Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why Season 4 to care for his family.
Mac began treatment in 2018, and Sinise took charge of logistics and emotional support, describing himself as his son’s “air traffic controller.” He shielded Mac from the stress of appointments and pursued any possible breakthrough. “You’re trying to take the pain away,” he told People magazine. After Mac’s death last year at 33, Sinise said he holds his daughters “a lot tighter,” reflecting a shift in priorities that makes time away from home more difficult.
Sinise’s wife Moira faced her own battle with stage 3 breast cancer around the same period, adding to the family’s challenges. When asked about an acting comeback, he said, “Something may come along and it’ll be right, but it’s harder to leave home now. I just want to be around family.”
Since 2020, Sinise has kept a low public profile, with his last major appearance at the 2021 National Memorial Day Concert in Washington, D.C. He credits the Gary Sinise Foundation, which he founded in 2011 to support veterans and first responders, with helping him through personal loss. “I’ve wrapped my arms around kids who have lost a mom or a dad,” he said, noting that witnessing others’ perseverance provided strength.
Industry chatter links Sinise to No Better Place to Die, a film about the Normandy invasion and the 82nd Airborne’s mission at the Merderet River, but his People interview casts doubt on any immediate return. Other notable credits include Apollo 13 and The Green Mile.
