Several months ago, we informed you about the potential big problems with Undead Labs studio, who is working on State of Decay 3. We have finally received an official statement on the project.
The head of Xbox Games Studios, Matt Booty, made an appearance on the latest episode of the Major Nelson podcast, which was released on September 1 on YouTube. In the broadcast, there were some interesting statements about the status of work on State of Decay 3.
Among them, Matt Booty said that in the development of State of Decay 3, the Undead Labs team is intensively assisted by Canadian studio The Coalition, responsible for Gears of War 4 and Gears 5.
“Undead Labs is working together with The Coalition, our Vancouver-based Gears of War studio. The team is using technology developed around Unreal Engine 5 and some elements developed with Gears of War. (…)
We recently spent a full day in Seattle, at the Undead Labs office. It was a great time that allowed us to look at State of Decay 3, which already offers a lot of really cool themes. The things that were implemented in State of Decay 2 are kind of a test for us, a test before what we want to put in State of Decay 3 finically,” said the head of Xbox Games Studios.
It is nice to see that State of Decay 3 is still in development and that there are experienced developers from The Coalition working on the project. From Matt Booty’s statement comes an optimistic message, however, and it does not seem that the project could be discontinued.
Rumors in March that there had been some pushback at Undead Labs may have hinted at such a scenario.
At the beginning of the year, there were claims online that the work culture at Undead Labs was becoming toxic and that the team’s management discriminated against women, which was publicized by Kotaku.
