The Multiplayer Dilemma: GTA 6 to Rely on Peer-to-Peer Networking, Insider Reports

Disheartening reports regarding the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI have recently surfaced, causing a wave of disappointment among fans. The source of these reports is the reputable leaker, Tez2, who has been a reliable insider for Rockstar Games-related information.

According to Tez2, Take-Two, the publisher of the game, has made the decision to forgo the use of dedicated servers in GTA 6’s multiplayer mode.

Continuing with Peer-to-Peer Networking

GTA 6 leak

The multiplayer mode in GTA 6 is expected to utilize the same peer-to-peer solutions found in Grand Theft Auto Online and Red Dead Online. This means that rather than having a central server where all calculations occur, the network structure will be distributed across the devices of all players.

Take-Two’s rationale for rejecting the implementation of dedicated servers in GTA 6 reportedly stems from cost considerations. Peer-to-peer networking is a cheaper alternative, raising questions about whether a series as lucrative as GTA, which recently surpassed 180 million copies sold, truly requires such cost-saving measures.

Quality Compromises and Sync Issues

The absence of dedicated servers in GTA 6 is likely to result in a deterioration of multiplayer quality. For instance, problems may arise with explosions in GTA Online. The game calculates the explosion on the device of the nearest player and then streams it to other players, leading to occasional synchronization issues.

Reactions on GTAForums to these reports have been predominantly negative, with concerns about potential negative impacts on the multiplayer experience. However, some users remain hopeful, as Rockstar Games has continually improved their networking systems to minimize problems associated with games that lack dedicated servers.

Red Dead Online showcased notable progress in this regard compared to GTA Online, leaving room for optimism regarding the future evolution of GTA 6’s multiplayer.

A Mix of Device-Based Calculations and Rockstar Servers

While GTA Online may lack traditional dedicated servers, it’s important to note that certain aspects of the game, such as matchmaking and transactions, are handled by Rockstar servers. Additionally, there is potential for Rockstar servers to synchronize elements of the game world state, even if the core calculations occur on players’ devices.

The exact release date of Grand Theft Auto VI remains unknown. However, a recent financial report from Take-Two Interactive hints that the game’s premiere will likely fall between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025. Take-Two anticipates record-breaking revenues of $8 billion within this twelve-month period, with the release of GTA 6 playing a significant role in achieving this ambitious target.

As fans eagerly await further updates on Grand Theft Auto VI, the absence of dedicated servers in the game’s multiplayer mode has sparked concerns and discussions. While the decision may impact the multiplayer experience, Rockstar Games’ commitment to refining their networking systems offers hope for an improved multiplayer environment.

The future of GTA 6’s multiplayer lies in the hands of Rockstar, as they continue to strive for an engaging and seamless gameplay experience in the expansive world of Grand Theft Auto.
