One of the standout moments from the recent PlayStation Showcase 2023 was the 12-minute gameplay reveal of Spider-Man 2. As fans witnessed the game in action for the first time, the impressive action sequences took the spotlight.

However, experts have closely examined the graphics and technological aspects of the gameplay. The Digital Foundry team has taken a deep dive into the material, providing valuable analysis.

Building on the Technological Foundations

The gameplay showcased by Insomniac Games suggests that Spider-Man 2 utilizes similar technological foundations as its predecessors, Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

While the game does not introduce revolutionary graphical techniques, it does demonstrate clear improvements over its predecessors. Notably, Spider-Man 2 is being developed exclusively for PlayStation 5, allowing the developers to leverage the full potential of the next-gen hardware.

Enhanced Detail and Variety of Buildings

One of the first noticeable improvements highlighted by Digital Foundry is the significant enhancement in the detail and variety of buildings. Previous entries in the series were limited by the performance capabilities of the PlayStation 4, resulting in relatively simplistic and repetitive building designs.

In Spider-Man 2, the buildings showcase more intricate geometry and incorporate various additional elements and decorations. Furthermore, a comparison of the virtual New York in the game reveals the addition of new objects, such as a large fish store along the coast. Although it is not a complete overhaul of the city, these changes make a noticeable difference, enhancing the overall immersion.

Refined Water Rendering and Impressive Reflections

Insomniac Games has also made improvements in water rendering for Spider-Man 2. The extended chase sequences and cutscenes showcase water with denser geometry that deforms more realistically upon contact with different objects.

The reflections, likely achieved through ray tracing, are particularly impressive. It is important to note that the gameplay was shown in graphics mode, prioritizing visual fidelity over performance.

Apart from the aforementioned improvements, Digital Foundry does not observe significant graphical advancements in Spider-Man 2. The visual quality remains high, which was expected considering the quality of the previous installments in the series.

It is possible that there are improvements in lighting and more intricate environmental details, such as an abundance of tiny scattered objects, which may be difficult to assess based on the showcased gameplay alone.

The Visual Level and Future Possibilities

The visual presentation of Spider-Man 2 has evoked mixed feelings among players, and critical voices have emerged. However, it is important to note that Insomniac Games has stated that the gameplay shown during the PlayStation Showcase is not from the final version of the game.

This statement raises the possibility that the production may still undergo further visual enhancements, potentially addressing some of the concerns expressed.

Spider-Man 2 continues to generate excitement as fans eagerly await its release. While the gameplay reveals notable improvements over its predecessors, the potential for further graphical enhancements remains.

As the development progresses and the final version of the game nears completion, fans can anticipate the culmination of Insomniac Games’ vision for an immersive and thrilling superhero experience.
