Following the premiere of the Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room, Tom Holland seized the opportunity to reflect on the past few years, revealing the immense challenges he has faced both in his career and personal life.
Departing from the spotlight and the beloved role of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the British actor bravely acknowledges his recent battle with alcohol addiction.
A Dark Spiral: Tom Holland’s Struggle with Alcohol
Holland admits that after indulging in Christmas parties, he became ensnared by an obsession with drinking, feeling trapped and controlled by alcohol. “I would wake up thinking about it. I was looking at the clock. When is it 12?” he confessed during an interview on the Jay Shetty podcast.
“I was definitely addicted to alcohol. I’m not shying away from that at all,” the actor bravely admits. He goes on to explain that his decision to quit drinking did not come suddenly or abruptly. Like many individuals, he experienced a particularly heavy drinking spree during a festive December. “I’ve always been able to drink a lot,” he shares.
In early 2022, Holland made the conscious choice to stop drinking and set a goal to reach his June birthday without consuming alcohol. Through determination and commitment, he achieved his objective.
Rediscovering Health and Clarity
Quitting alcohol brought about a multitude of positive changes for Holland. He noticed improvements in his sleep quality, enhanced problem-solving abilities, and a newfound sense of mental clarity. “I had much better mental clarity. I felt healthier, I felt fitter,” he shares.
Once he fully experienced the numerous health benefits and regained a true sense of self, Holland realized the immense value of his sobriety. He acknowledges that he is not advocating for complete sobriety for everyone but hopes to inspire individuals to consume less alcohol and find their own balance.
Navigating the Industry and Finding Happiness
In discussing his career, Holland candidly expresses his ambivalence towards Hollywood. He admits that the business aspect of the industry intimidates him, and he strives to lead as normal a life as possible outside of it. “It’s definitely been a constant thought to not lose yourself,” he reflects.
Having witnessed peers and childhood friends succumb to the pitfalls of fame and lose their true selves, Holland emphasizes the importance of focusing on personal happiness and staying grounded amidst the industry’s pressures.
While rumors swirl about Holland’s potential involvement in a new Spider-Man trilogy, this time in a behind-the-scenes role, the actor remains focused on his journey of self-discovery and growth. The possibility of a hypothetical Spider-Man 4 with Holland as the protagonist also adds excitement to his future prospects.
