The first reactions for the highly-anticipated Barbie movie, directed by Greta Gerwig, are pouring in, and it seems that audiences are overwhelmingly impressed by the whimsical and pink-tastic film.

Greta Gerwig, known for her acclaimed work on films like Lady Bird and Little Women, takes the helm as both director and co-writer alongside Noah Baumbach. The official logline describes the fantasy comedy as follows: “After being expelled from Barbieland for being a less-than-perfect doll, Barbie (played by Margot Robbie) embarks on a journey in the real world to discover true happiness, with the help of Ken (played by Ryan Gosling).”

Praise for Greta Gerwig’s Direction and Margot Robbie’s Performance

ComicBook.com‘s Jamie Jirak declares, “I can’t officially quit Twitter before telling you all that #Barbie is currently my favorite film of the year. Greta Gerwig somehow exceeded my expectations. She tackles the positives and negatives of Barbie so beautifully. Give Ryan Gosling an Oscar nomination, I’m dead serious!”

The Atom Review’s enthusiastic verdict is that the film is “heartfelt & hilarious.” They praise Margot Robbie’s standout performance, boldly predicting an Oscar nomination, while describing the movie as “super fun, endearing & magical.” They further claim that Barbie is Greta Gerwig’s best film yet, setting high expectations for her future projects.

A Fun-filled, Empowering Experience

Critic Carla Renata shares her experience, stating, “I saw #BarbieTheMovie and Greta Gerwig left me all in my feelings, as did the production design, costumes, hair, and makeup! I was living for the dance numbers led by Simu Liu! It’s overblown fun with a feminist twist.”

Sharronda Williams provides a balanced perspective, acknowledging that Barbie is “witty, heartfelt, and downright fun at times.” She commends Ryan Gosling for his comedic brilliance, while Margot Robbie delivers a heartfelt performance that tugs at the heartstrings. However, Williams notes that the screenplay occasionally feels bloated.

Greta Gerwig’s Artistic Brilliance and Margot Robbie’s Captivating Performance

Reactions continue to pour in, with Kyle Buchanan of The New York Times exclaiming, “Further BARBIE thoughts to come, but the number one is I can’t believe Greta Gerwig got away with it!” expressing admiration for Gerwig’s audacious vision.

Variety’s Katcy Stephan hails Barbie as “perfection.” Stephan highlights Gerwig’s nuanced commentary on womanhood, describing the film as whimsical, wonderful, and laugh-out-loud funny. The performances of the entire cast, particularly Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, are praised for their brilliance and authenticity.

Experience the Thrills of Thanksgiving’s Slasher Mayhem: “Are you a fan of holiday-themed horror? Don’t miss our in-depth review of Thanksgiving, Eli Roth’s latest foray into the slasher genre. Find out how this film combines over-the-top gore, dark comedy, and a satirical take on consumer culture for a uniquely thrilling experience.”

An Immersive World and Heartfelt Story

Joseph Deckelmeier of Screen Rant emphasizes the film’s surprising and entertaining nature, calling it “funny, bombastic, and very smart.” He commends Gerwig’s ambitious approach, highlighting Margot Robbie’s exceptional performance, as well as the pure entertainment provided by Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu.

Collider’s Perri Nemiroff focuses on the craftsmanship and production design, praising the attention to detail in creating the Barbie universe. However, Nemiroff notes that while Margot Robbie’s journey is well-served, some other characters’ arcs could have been further explored.

Barbie is set to grace theaters on July 21, 2023, promising an enchanting cinematic experience for audiences of all ages.
