Activision is stepping up its game in the fight against cheaters with the latest installment of its flagship franchise, “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.” The company has detailed a robust anti-cheat system designed to maintain fair play and enhance the gaming experience for all players.
The anti-cheat team, known as Team Ricochet, has been developing the Ricochet Anti-Cheat system over the past two years, incorporating it into existing Call of Duty titles. This system employs both client and server-side components that utilize Machine Learning (ML) to improve the speed and accuracy of cheat detection and prevention.
The ML algorithms work in tandem with a human team to analyze data and identify potential cheating behavior. However, the system is designed to ensure that no bans are issued without human oversight.
One of the more novel features introduced in “Modern Warfare 3,” particularly in the Warzone mode, is a system dubbed “Splat.” This system is designed to deal with cheaters in a rather direct manner. If a player is detected cheating, Splat can end their game by causing their character to meet an untimely demise.
For instance, a cheater might find their parachute non-functional, leading to a literal splat upon impact with the ground. Or, if they’re already on the battlefield, a simple jump could result in a fall as if from a great height—again resulting in a Splat. The primary aim of these measures is to prevent cheaters from affecting the outcome of a match.
This proactive approach to cheat prevention is a response to the community’s concerns about the increasing prevalence of cheaters, which has marred the gaming experience for many.
The original “Call of Duty: Warzone” saw a significant uptick in cheating, leading to player frustration and attrition. With these new systems in place, Activision hopes to win back players who may have left due to these issues and to provide a more secure and enjoyable environment for all players.
“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3” is set to release across all platforms on November 10, and with these anti-cheat measures, Activision is signaling a clear commitment to fair play.
