The highly anticipated sci-fi epic Dune: Part Two is set to hit theaters on March 1st, continuing the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s iconic 1965 novel. With glowing reviews and high fan expectations, many are already looking ahead to the future of the franchise. Writer and director Denis Villeneuve has expressed interest in adapting the next book, Dune Messiah, into a third film but wants to avoid rushing into it.
Villeneuve stated in an interview with The Times, “There is absolutely a desire to have a third one, but I don’t want to rush it. The danger in Hollywood is that people get excited and only think about release dates, not quality.” He seems intent on ensuring the next installment matches the high standard of the previous films before moving forward.
The first Dune film premiered in 2021 to critical acclaim, sparking high anticipation for the follow-up releasing three years later. Villeneuve had originally planned Part Two for 2023 but production was delayed due to an actors’ strike, pushing the release back to 2024. This has led some to speculate that a third film could be a few years away, though the expanding Dune universe may necessitate more output.
A prequel series Dune: The Sisterhood is set to debut on HBO Max in late 2024. The show will be set 10,000 years before the films, chronicling the origins of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood. While different in tone and plot, the show’s success could influence decisions regarding future films.
Villeneuve seems set on ensuring quality above all, waiting until the right time creatively and commercially. As he told GamesRadar+, “It’s a comparison that I would have never dared to do myself. I think it’s a beautiful compliment because Empire Strikes Back is by far my favourite Star Wars movie.
So, it’s like, coming from Chris, an incredible compliment.” With Dune: Part Two already earning Empire Strikes Back comparisons from none other than Christopher Nolan, it’s clear Villeneuve is steering the franchise in the right direction.
Only time will tell when audiences get to continue the saga of Paul Atreides on the big screen again. But Villeneuve’s patience and artistic integrity may ultimately pay off, delivering another sci-fi spectacle that lives up to the groundwork laid by the first two entries. For now, the focus rests on the highly anticipated arrival of Dune: Part Two next month.
