In a relatively quiet weekend at the global box office, A24’s divisive film Civil War managed to retain the top spot, fending off new releases Abigail and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Civil War pulled in an estimated $21.4 million worldwide for its second weekend.

Despite expectations it would be overtaken by Universal’s new horror thriller Abigail, Civil War’s $11.1 million 3-day North American haul narrowly edged out Abigail’s $10.2 million domestic debut. The buzzy horror film from the directors of the recent Scream movies landed at #4 globally with a $15.2 million worldwide launch, including $5 million from 63 international markets.

Civil War continued expanding internationally, releasing in 23 new territories and grossing $10.3 million overseas for a $16.8 million international total so far. Its worldwide cume after two weeks stands at $61.7 million.

Another new release, Guy Ritchie’s WWII film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, opened to a muted $9.8 million globally for Lionsgate. That included a $9 million domestic launch with an international estimate of just $778,000 from 13 markets as Amazon has rights in many overseas territories.

Holding solidly in second place worldwide was Warner Bros’ monster mash-up Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire with $31.1 million. That brings the MonsterVerse sequel’s global total to $485.2 million, on its way to surpassing the $500 million mark soon. Among individual international markets, China remains the top performer at $119.3 million.

Further down the charts, Sam Taylor-Johnson’s Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black cracked the top 10 with $6.4 million globally in its second weekend for a $16.9 million cume so far. The Crunchyroll anime release Spy x Family Code: White also had a solid $4.9 million domestic opening.

In holdover highlights, Universal’s Kung Fu Panda 4 added $19.9 million for $480.3 million globally, while Dune: Part Two reached $695.8 million worldwide ahead of its digital release. The Ghostbusters sequel Frozen Empire is nearing the end of its run with $176.1 million globally so far.

Next weekend brings the release of Challengers starring Zendaya, which is generating strong buzz. But Civil War looks poised to maintain its grip on the top spot for at least one more frame as it continues expanding internationally.
