You’ve heard of hummingbirds but never truly appreciated their wonder until now. Every Little Thing offers a vivid glimpse into these miniature miracles and their dedicated protector Terry Masear. Between dramatic slow-motion shots and up-close visits with patients in her care, you can’t help but fall for hummingbirds just as Masear has. And her story will leave you in awe of how one person can make such an impact.

Out of her sprawling home near Los Angeles, Masear runs a buzzing rehabilitation center utterly devoted to hummingbirds. All day calls flood in about injured or orphaned birds in need of help. And for over a decade Masear has answered each one, greeting every arrival like a long lost friend.

With expert care and boundless compassion, she nurses even the most severe cases back to full health. Some then dart off stronger than ever, while sadly others don’t make the journey. But through it all Masear’s gentle spirit shines as a beacon of hope.

Beyond the individual tales of recovery though, Masear offers insightful perspective connecting humans and hummingbirds. We see in these tiny treasures the same drive to live that fuels us, and in the risks they endure an echo of life’s fragility.

Most movingly, Masear’s past shows how struggling shapes empathy, leading her to become a champion for any in need. By sharing her story and the birds she loves, Every Little Thing spreads contagious appreciation for Earth’s little wonders, inspiring viewers to protect what’s most precious.

A Life for Hummingbirds

What path led Terry Masear to become one of America’s foremost hummingbird caretakers? Both her early years and current work show a life dedicated to helping others.

Every Little Thing Review

Growing up, Terry faced difficulties that could have broken her spirit. She endured a troubled childhood where she didn’t feel protected. But it also nourished great empathy within – an ability to understand the vulnerability of all living things.

This capacity for compassion found focus when Terry discovered hummingbirds as an adult. For over 15 years now, she has run a rehabilitation center for them out of her home above Los Angeles. Each day brings a new flock of patients, many badly injured or orphaned without a mother’s care.

Terry works tirelessly to mend their wounds and feed newcomers around the clock. Tiny syringes replace beaks for feedings, while deft hands soothe frazzled feathers. Her nurturing helps even the weakest birds regain strength before release. But with such fragility comes risk, and not all survive despite her efforts. These losses affect Terry deeply.

The emotional cost of her mission is clear. Yet Terry persists due to her bond with these beautiful creatures and natural world they inhabit. She sees in them the same drive to live that fuels all beings. And after a lifetime facing hardship herself, Terry understands their struggle in a uniquely profound way.

Perhaps those hardships also sparked her protective spirit, leading Terry to open her home as a haven for hummingbirds. Where others see creatures too small to merit care, she recognizes lives as worthy of safekeeping as any other. Through her example, Terry reminds us that even the littlest among us deserve compassion.

So her days remain full tending to each patient with care, skill and hope. And when the time comes for healing birds to fly free once more, Terry takes comfort knowing another piece of the vibrant natural tapestry remains whole thanks to her work.

Majestic Moments Caught on Camera

You might not think such tiny creatures could make for captivating cinema. But the filmmakers behind Every Little Thing prove hummingbirds offer wonderful subjects for slow-motion shots and close observation. Their camerawork lets audiences fully appreciate these aerial marvels.

We’ve all seen hummingbirds zipping around gardens, a blur of color and wings. But here those swift motions slow to reveal exquisite details. Feathers stream behind like banners, crown jewels shine, tongues probe flowers at leisure. You notice each delicate maneuver that sustains hovering flight. Without speed to hide behind, the birds’ mastery impresses in a whole new light.

Often the camera focuses on just one, suspended alone against a blurred backdrop. This isolation forces our eyes to linger and discover more with each viewing. We trace every contour of iridescent plumage, see intricate patterns no field guide conveys. It’s as if the filmmakers craft windows for us to peer through, straight into a hummingbird’s world.

Close-ups prove just as breathtaking. Framing tight on beating wings or inquisitive eyes, we’re right there alongside our subject. The intimacy startles – have you ever seen nature up so close? Minute feathers stand out sharper than any nature documentary before. Through the lens we’re privileged to notice flecks and tints invisible to our naked sight.

Slowed and magnified, these moments lift spirits with their beauty. But they also deepen our connection to creatures often passing through our lives in a flash. By lingering in their domain, even for a film’s duration, we gain newfound respect. The cinematographers invite engrossment beyond what images alone can offer. They foster an appreciation for nature’s minute marvels rarely granted elsewhere.

So anyone wishing to immerse in hummingbirds’ world needs only press play. Through deft camerawork, Every Little Thing spreads to all the wonder of observing these jewels up close – without ever leaving your seat. It’s nature viewing at its most majestic, educating eyes and hearts alike.

Understanding Our Connectedness

What connects tiny hummingbirds to humans? According to rehabilitator Terry Masear, more than you might think. In Every Little Thing, she reveals how caring for the birds unlocked deep empathy born from shared struggles.

Masear faced trauma growing up, feeling something was “amiss” from a young age. Later difficulties with addiction challenge the idea that humans alone bear life’s pains. But in dark times, she found light – through three decades with loving husband Frank. And today, through the hummingbirds.

When injured birds come seeking aid, Masear treats each with the patience of a mother. Mending fragile wings demands care beyond simple medical skills. It shows emotional intelligence to persevere through setbacks, as when injuries prove too grievous. You sense her wisdom comes from walking in smaller souls’ shoes.

The documentary invites seeing with new eyes. Slow-motion shots immerse us in hummingbirds’ world, where survival hinges on rapid wingbeats. Their fragility resonates as lives hang by a thread each day. Yet these miniature marvels persist with a tenacity familiar to anyone fighting through hardships, great or small.

In sharing her backstory, Masear dismantles barriers between species. We feel her empathy stems as much from within as without – a shared capacity for resilience across all beings. Her reminder that “all the things that you see with these birds, it’s all that we’ve gone through” is quietly profound.

Perhaps this is the film’s beauty – reducing differences until our shared existence, and dependence on Earth’s balance, comes into focus. Masear’s compassion extends beyond individual encounters, condemning a detached view of nature. She advocates considering all inhabit this blue sphere as one great family, fates interconnected.

So as we marvel at hummingbirds’ magnificence, may we also see pieces of ourselves. Their grace a reminder to greet each living thing with care, acknowledge shared struggles, and remedy mankind’s destructive tendencies with empathy, wisdom and love.

Tiny Titans

At the center of Every Little Thing are some very small stars – the individual hummingbirds fighting to overcome injury and illness. Though fragile, each possesses a will to live that cannot help but inspire.

We meet Wasabi, a confident young bird serving as Terry’s co-pilot. His curiosity shows a future full of exploring nature’s bounty. Then there’s Jimmy, forever getting into mischief yet always making viewers smile. Under Terry’s care, he blooms into a real character.

Cactus tugs hardest on the heartstrings. Found badly injured, his wings mangled, survival seems impossible. But through Terry’s round-the-clock devotion, his condition slowly improves. Stubborn spirit serves him well in each new challenge.

Raisin arrived nestled in Terry’s cupped hands, only a few days old. Fed every 30 minutes, her determined peeps demand each tiny meal. Growth is steady under watch of a second “mother”.

Not all stories have happy endings, a truth hard to accept. Sugar Baby came drenched in sugary poison, wings beyond repair. But even in final hours, Terry makes her as comfortable as can be, ensuring this small soul knows love.

It’s impossible not to root for these tiny titans in their fight. Their resilience in the face of difficulty puts our own problems in perspective. Through Terry’s guidance, each receives best chance at life. Her commitment shows nature’s gifts deserve utmost respect, while reminding that even seemingly insignificant beings possess incredible spirit.

Thanks to virtuoso filmmaking, we see the world afresh through hummingbirds’ eyes. Their fragile forms belie an inner fire compelling them ever skyward. In Every Little Thing, moments of wonder prove life’s simplest joys often come in smallest packages.

Lifting Spirits with Song

Music plays a key role in Every Little Thing, artfully guiding viewers through emotional peaks and valleys. Just as Terry soothes injured birds, melodies calm and uplift during stressful scenes.

When a hummingbird’s life hangs in the balance, a gentle acoustic tune alleviates tension. Its folksy strumming matches Terry’s delicate ministrations, as if serenading our winged friend toward healing. Triumphs are set to sweeping instrumentals, their rising notes swelling our joy.

Song selection feels tailor-made. During introductions to each little patient, their unique personalities shine through in perfectly paired songs. Bouncy melodies accompany feisty spirits, while sweeter harmonies suit the more delicate. Even babies receive their own soothing lullabies.

Pacing flows natural as a hummingbird’s flight. Scenes lengthen when empathy runs high, granting time to absorb each creature’s plight. Moments pass fleetingly during lightheartedness, respecting our limited attention yet leaving impression. Story arcs unfold at predictable yet riveting pace, mimicking life’s ups and downs.

Editing seamlessly interweaves music with imagery, amplifying emotional resonance. This underscores how much care went into crafting Every Little Thing as more than just a beautiful look at nature. It’s a beautifully moving tribute to compassion’s power to lift all spirits.

Lifting Spirits

What a journey we’ve been on! We’ve met some truly inspiring people striving to make a difference in their own unique ways. Terry’s dedication to hummingbirds really takes your breath away. Facing each delicate patient with such care, hopefully and prayer, it’s clear her passion touches far deeper than any single bird.

Through it all she reminds us that compassion matters. These small lives in her hands, each saved or lost, show how even seemingly insignificant acts can affect forever. Her humble work lifts spirits on wings both great and small. All living things deserve kindness, though nature gives no guarantee. By nurturing what’s fragile with hope against hope, Terry shows our shared humanity.

Documenting her world with such beautiful care, Aitken’s film has surely lifted many spirits too. Bringing us into Terry’s sanctuary, those stunning closeups unfold a magic few get to witness. And through it all we feel her gently guiding hand, helping us navigate life’s fragility with grace. Like Terry patting hummingbirds’ backs, she supports us through emotional flight.

If after this journey you still question whether any life, however small, is worthy of love, I hope you’ll give Every Little Thing another look. Feel lifted higher on wings of compassion, and appreciate and blessings of even our tiniest fellow travelers a little more. Who knows how far a little kindness can carry us? I think Terry would be glad to know her message flew a little farther.
