Steven Spielberg Revs Up for Blockbuster Return with Mysterious ‘Event Film’

The legendary director is going back to his summer movie roots with a top-secret sci-fi project set for May 2026.

After over a decade focusing on prestigious dramas, Steven Spielberg is making a cosmic comeback to the summer blockbuster genre he pioneered. Universal Pictures has set a May 15, 2026 release date for an untitled “original event film” directed by the iconic Oscar winner.

While plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, the project is rumored to involve UFOs and aliens – subject matter that has fueled some of Spielberg’s most famous works like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. The mysterious movie would mark his first theatrical release targetted for the summer movie season since 2016’s The BFG.

Spielberg is credited with redefining the summer blockbuster phenomenon starting with his 1975 smash Jaws. He followed that up with a string of hugely successful warm weather crowd-pleasers like Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., and the original Jurassic Park throughout the 1980s and 90s. However, in recent years, the celebrated filmmaker has pivoted towards more award-friendly fare like Lincoln, Bridge of Spies, The Post, and his latest The Fabelmans – many strategically slated for end-of-year releases to align with Oscar season.

This scheduling shift has resulted in Spielberg experiencing a box office slump in the 2020s. His last true commercial hit was 2018’s Ready Player One, with recent films like West Side Story failing to turn a profit despite strong reviews. An alien-invasion sci-fi spectacle hitting theaters in primetime summer moviegoing season could be just the re-energizing jolt Spielberg needs.

The UFO project reunites the director with frequent collaborator David Koepp, who has co-written several Spielberg classics including Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Koepp is penning the new film’s screenplay based on an original story idea by Spielberg himself.

While specific plot details are scarce, the sources indicate the mysterious movie will channel Spielberg’s signature blending of awe-inspiring wonderment and chilling genre thrills that were hallmarks of his most iconic summer hits. Insiders describe it as a true “event film” in the vein of Jaws, Close Encounters, and Jurassic Park – spectacular, visceral cinematic experiences meant to be seen on the biggest screen possible.

After spending the last decade exploring more grounded human stories, the 2026 project represents a full-circle return to Spielberg’s roots delivering jaw-dropping spectacle and big-budget popcorn entertainment. Audiences have been clamoring for him to make another classic summer adventure film in his wheelhouse.

But the UFO epic is not the only hotly anticipated Spielberg project on the horizon either. He is also developing a new take on the 1968 Steve McQueen thriller Bullitt, with Bradley Cooper set to star as the iconic San Francisco cop. The Fabelmans writer/producer Kristie Macosko Krieger recently teased the script is being finalized.

At 76 years old, Spielberg is proving he has plenty of blockbuster mojo left, giving moviegoers double the reason to get excited about a resurgence of classic Spielberg-style showmanship and suspense on the big screen. But one project is shrouded in an extra level of intrigue – that mysterious “event film” promising a spectacular summer 2026 alien encounter unlike anything audiences have seen before.
