Set in a dystopian future where powerful individuals known as Capes have been outlawed, Capes presents players with an opportunity to change the tide. As the leader of an underground resistance using their extraordinary abilities for good, players must guide a dynamic team of Capes through story-driven, turn-based missions. Developed by Spitfire Interactive and released in 2023, Capes embraces the studio’s debut in the strategy genre with a compelling narrative wrapped around tactical combat.

While some uneven aspects, like inconsistent voice acting and a weakly developed plot, weigh things down at times, Capes still succeeds in crafting an absorbing superhero world. Featuring a diverse cast of Capes to recruit and upgrade, each with their own playstyle, the game shows flashes of strategic brilliance through creative abilities and challenging encounters that left me scrambling for clever solutions.

When the pieces come together in Capes, it offers immersive fun, steering heroes through dystopian dilemmas one shrewd move at a time. Despite rough edges, the game overall hits its mark, providing an engaging interactive narrative for fans of strategic gameplay sprinkled with superpowers.

Superpowers and Society

In Cape Town, King City represents a chilling vision of a future where those with abilities face oppression and fear. Known simply as The Company, a shadowy organization rules the urban jungle with an iron fist, outlawing superhuman powers and swiftly “disappearing” any who are caught wielding them.

It’s in this bleak setting that resistance emerges. Led by the mysteriously named Doctrine, heroes like Facet and Rebound refuse to stay silent. Through extraordinary talents and teamwork, they work to help citizens escape capture while undermining the draconian forces holding the city in their grip. From stealth missions to showdowns against tyrannical villains, the heroes risk everything to change their world.

The story brings familiar dystopian themes to the table. A totalitarian regime clamps down on what makes individuals different, dividing society. However, the vibrant characters ensure each moment feels alive; their witty banter and distinct looks keep players invested in their struggle. While the plot is nothing revolutionary, the lively cast helps overcome predictable story beats to deliver an entertaining narrative overall.

Gameplay seamlessly represents the symbiotic relationship between heroes and story. Tactical battles require utilizing each character’s unique powers jointly, just as the rebel cell relies on its members’ combined efforts in the campaign. Difficult missions force careful planning and adaptation, much as constant threats to resistance demand strategic, evolving responses. The superpowers themselves arise from societal suppression, emphasizing how even the bleakest settings can birth defiant champions fighting for a just world.

Fighting the Power

Mastering combat in Capes means making the most of its deep tactics. Battles play out on a grid, with heroes and villains taking turns to move and act. Players get to preview each side’s move ranges, letting them strategize attacks. Positioning is key, as certain powers only work at short distances while others shine from afar.

Capes Review

Success relies on a varied team. Characters are split into classes like tank, damage, or support, adding diverse tools to every fight. Tanky Facet draws aggression, while glass cannons deal huge damage. Support weavers and bolster allies through healing or buffs. Where one lacks, others make up, ensuring balance.

Things get really interesting through team-ups. When near one another, heroes can combine powers for amazing synergy. One favorite pairs lightning-slinger Weathervane with the crystal growths of Facet. The crystals conduct Weathervane’s bolts, empowering widespread shocks. Another sees speedster Mercurial leave a trail of flame alongside the pyro Ignis, engulfing pursuers in her wake. With careful placement, such combos decimate opposing forces.

Players further empower their team outside of battle. Skill points earned through quests upgrade each character down their own upgrade tree. No two builds end identical, so strategy evolves as abilities branch off in new directions. Additionally, replaying earlier missions at a higher level lets underused heroes catch up, rounding out squads.

Nothing feels quite as satisfying as pulling off ultimate attacks. As players meet conditions in battle, a meter fills toward spectacular finishers. Seeing the teleporting assassin Rebound dismantle teams with a single blink brings a smile. When the going gets tough, smart ultimates ensure even the trickiest threats find their match.

With its dynamic fighting and character progression, Capes pits progress against possibility in all the best ways. Players seeking flexible frontier exploration won’t be let down.

Engrossing Cityscapes and Heroic Heroes

King City comes to life through Capes’ striking visuals. Bold colors paint a bustling cyberpunk backdrop, from lively streets to imposing cityscapes. It’s easy to picture masked crusaders defending this vivid setting against nefarious forces. The comic book-inspired art direction immerses you in the action.

Capes Review

Characters exhibit personality, whether chatting or battling. Facial captures animate discussions between heroes and villains, while unique abilities breathe life into strategic skirmishes. Environments shift seamlessly between cutscenes and combat, too. Unfortunately, some characters, like Doctrine, speak too softly amid explosive sound effects. The equally impressive voice acting gets sometimes drowned out.

Still, smooth performance across systems proves this title’s accessibility. Complex animations and effects fly by without hitches on lower-end hardware. Capes runs remarkably well for its visual caliber. Accessible action awaits, regardless of your rig.

Tooltips could use size trims, however. While informative, outsized pop-ups distract from crucial combat moments. Minor yet impactful, sharper interface tweaks would further polish an enthralling experience.

Under its stylish surface lies a deeper substance. King City springs to life through sight and sound. Memorable heroes emerge from every interaction. Though minor mixing kinks cloud smaller notes, Capes pushes playable pastimes to new graphical heights across all platforms. Its engaging cityscapes and heroic heroes make for one captivating comic caper.

Heroes Among Us

Within King City’s oppressed populace, a team is taking a stand against tyranny’s tightening grip. Each member of this rebel cell brings unique strengths to the fight.

Capes Review

There’s Facet, who faces foes head-on with crystal armor robust enough to turn aside rifle fire. His endurance shields allies from harm, buying precious time. Then there’s Rebound, zipping from shadow to shadow like a teleporting trickster. Her backstabbing surprises leave no one unaccounted for.

Deft innovations also aid the cause. Weathervane wields stormy sorcery, lightning leaping from one target to the next. His charged storms shake spirits as they strike bodily. For mind over matter, skills like Mindfire’s lend aid; thoughts tangible as blades make mysteries matter little.

Diverse talents together form a formidable front, but each upholds a role. Facet tanks assault, so teammates strike unscathed. Weathervane shocks in swarms as Rebound repositions at will. Their alliance allows advantages one alone could never attain.

Yet, strengths also evolve. Skill points garnered through grit and guile grant growth. Facet might call crystal more reliably; Rebound renders each reappearance deadlier. Their progress parallels the people’s hope and heroes rising where once only fear and foes held field.

This unlikely league looms large through their leader, Doctrine. His mystery masks much, but his message motivates: unity upholds dignity where division destroys it. Together and through each other, this band of unlikely allies aims to prove that where will and wit walk hand in hand, even windblown wishes may find wings.

Difficulty Through Strategy

These missions against overwhelming numbers don’t feel impossible, thanks to the depth of strategic options. Positioning heroes precisely and knowing when to defend or retreat is just as vital as powerful attacks. Complementary abilities also provide multiple paths to victory.

Capes Review

Weathervane’s chain lightning, for instance, deals extra damage when bounced between opponents or objects like Facet’s crystal formations. Meanwhile, characters like Rebound can teleport allies to safety or flank enemies from the shadows.

Objectives like protecting civilians add further complications. With hostages on the field, abilities that incapacitate without killing become invaluable. Others support defensive roles; Facet’s shield aptly buys time. As danger increases with higher difficulties, strategically replaying earlier levels affords the chance to expand options through character upgrades.

This evolving arsenal proves key to toppling later bosses and their minions, since overcoming such overwhelming odds demands meticulous planning and a combination of all strengths. Successful strategizing results in narrow escapes, feeling all the more rewarding and hard-fought battles, a testament to instinct and preparation. Through constant strategy refinement, even the most challenging encounters become surmountable puzzles of positioning and teamwork.

Capes Flight to Freedom

Capes offers a compelling story of resistance in a dystopian future. Players join a band of rebels using extraordinary abilities to fight for justice in an oppressive city. Though the plot isn’t groundbreaking, it taps into salient themes that thoughtfully explore what it means to stand up against tyranny.

Capes Review

The diverse cast helps bring this world to life. Each character feels richly developed, with distinct personalities and powers that enhance both narrative and strategy. Their abilities also synergize in memorable boss fights and patrols against impossible odds. Through creative planning, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome.

Combat requires meticulous positioning and timing. One wrong move risks defeat, keeping tensions high until the final turn. Replaying earlier missions to strengthen skills for later ones ensures preparedness against growing threats. Meanwhile, characters never lose their identities; even with upgrades, glass cannons like Rebound stay true glass cannons.

While minor issues exist, Spitfire hits more marks than it misses. The developer shows prowess for action-packed cutscenes and stages that stimulate strategic thought. Most impressively, Capes runs smoothly on modest hardware, prioritizing accessibility. With a few tweaks, this already engaging tribute to heroic virtues could soar to greater heights. But for a debut, Capes takes flight in crafting an uplifting adventure everyone can enjoy.

The Review

Capes

The dystopian setting riffs compellingly on real themes while keeping things fun. Some issues hold it back, but Capes soars with its captivating combat, accessible presentation, and heart for heroic characters. With polish, imagination, and passion like this, Spitfire's future looks bright. For gamers seeking an uplifting struggle of resistance against tyranny, Capes more than earns its wings.
