From the moment you step onto that tour bus, you know Surmount is setting its sights high. This ambitious climbing game casts players as one of many hopeful mountaineers drawn to the summits of Mount Om, said to be the world’s tallest peak. Yet as you meet the quirky locals and commence your training, rumors of lost climbers and strange happenings send suspicion creeping up the mountainside. What secrets lie awaiting discovery under those jagged slopes? And do you have the skill, and nerve, to reach the top?

Developed by the indie duo Indiana-Jonas, Surmount welcomes all players to test their mettle on its procedurally generated ascents. Beginning with gentle tutorials, it delivers accessibility without compromise on challenge. Scaling its diverse biomes will demand mastery of swinging, clinging and calculated risk-taking to find the safest paths. Life-saving supplies and power-ups litter the cliffs, but fall and you start again from the mountain’s base. Perseverance and practice alone will carry climbers to new heights.

Along the way, surprises await around every rocky corner. Charming characters invite conversation at camps between attempts, offering side missions that expand on their stories. And as the mysteries of Mount Om deepen, more questions arise. What lies in wait at the rumored summit? And why have none returned to share what they found? To learn the answers, players must conquer Surmount’s biggest test yet in a heart-pumping, pixelated pursuit of peaks that feels ready to scale new heights.

Mountaineering Mysteries and Mirthful Meetings

Rising above all else is the imposing Mount Om. Legend tells no climber has ever reached its summit, lost to the mists and secrets held by the strange mountain’s peaks. You join a crew setting out to find what truly lies above the clouds. But first, in New Tully village below, an odd assortment of locals awaits.

Chief among them is the curious Kenzie, a scientist enticed by Mount Om’s puzzles. She tasks you with tasks to earn passage to the slopes, supply a handy device to stay in contact, and convey news between the regions. Through her studies and your skills, perhaps the mountain’s mysteries may lift. Elsewhere in town awaits a rogues’ gallery of colorful characters, each with their own expedition or bizarre bout of bother for a willing wanderer. Helping hands are everywhere in the eccentric hamlet.

As zones are zipped past thanks to Kenzie’s handy cannon, the mysteries mount along with the mountain. Strange sounds echo through strange storms in the highest heights. Figures flit at the fringes of vision amid vegetation progressively more vivid and vicious. And what madness might await at the soaring summit still shrouded in swirling mists? With wits, luck and limber skills, the quest continues to uncover Om’s obscured origins and ominous omissions through gameplay that’s continuously climactic.

From friendly faces in the village below to formidable formations high above, Mount Om’s obscurities only deepen the higher you ascend. Yet surprises and solutions could await around any craggy corner of the procedurally periling peaks, whether supplies to sustain the struggle or subtle strokes in the unravelling narrative.

For all heights still to reach and revelations remaining, the road remains rife with riotous characters ready with a response. Which mysteries will be mastered first, and which mountains of mayhem lie in wait? Only the ascent will unveil…

Mastering the Mountain: Climbing, Gear, and Getting to the Top

Scaling the sheer cliffs of Mount Om takes some doing. The mechanics let you inch your way up, but it’s no easy feat. You grip with both hands, swing side to side to build momentum, then launch yourself to the next ledge in a death-defying maneuver. Stamina depletes with each hoist, so rest is crucial at the anchored points dotting the rock face. Mastering momentum through spins launches you farther, saving precious energy.

Surmount Review

Procedurally generated levels mean no two treks are the same. Randomized routes snake their way up, through tangled vines or jagged ice fields. Getting lost is easy with cliffs obscuring the view—zooming out would help navigate these treacherous slopes. Finding the path and camp requires problem-solving and risk-taking. Adventure awaits around every rocky outcrop!

Items discovered aid the ascent, from rope to grapple launch points to bounce pads cushioning falls. But supplies like rope have limited uses, so conserving resources proves key. Food like fruit and bugs replenishes spent stamina. Traders even sell upgrades at campsites between biomes. These perks like extra stamina bolster your climbing power.

Accessibility options cater to all abilities. Altering swing controls to individual preference helps focus on climbing flow. Gravity and stamina tweaks plus invincibility modes let folks enjoy the mountain’s wonders without punishing difficulty. Customization creates the climber that fits you best too.

While glitches like spawning in walls add aggravation, Surmount engages the inner mountaineer in all of us. Scaling new heights, problem-solving the paths, and mastering mechanics through upgrades—it’s a challenge to reach the summit, but the journey itself provides joy and satisfaction. Now let’s climb! The views from above await.

Taking on the Mountain: Scaling Surmount’s Summits

It’s no small feat conquering the slopes of Mount Om. This towering peak challenges even the strongest mountaineers with its treacherous terrain. But don’t let the imposing summit discourage – there’s something here for climbers of all abilities.

Surmount Review

The mountain’s four zones offer progressively more perilous paths up rugged rockfaces. Zone 1 provides a gentler reintroduction to climbing, with forgiving footholds on the way to warming campfires. But those fires won’t stay lit forever. As you push into the higher zones, frigid winds in Zone 2 demand deft gloves, and thorny thickets stand between you and the next summit in Zone 3.

Still, variety means every climb feels fresh. Biomes like icy glaciers or lush rainforests rotate between runs, obscuring shortcuts. Rocks slick with snow or tangled vines spring new obstacles with every randomized layout. Figuring the safest route trains an eagle eye for handy handholds.

Daily challenges provide optional, standalone maps calibrated for testing skills. With objectives like sprinting a timed path, these prove skill and heart against custom layouts, without risk to the main story’s progress.

Accessibility stretches experiences further. Tweaks like reduced falling damage let pure fun trump frustration. And a helpful hint or rope’s throw can unstick the stranded without cheapening the challenge.

Ultimately, Surmount balances risk and reward through its smart, adaptable designs. Randomization maintains mystery in an otherwise familiar formula, while thoughtful features nurture even the greenest climbers. With creative routes open for the taking, every summit feels a personal triumph, whether players scale casual or competitive heights. Therein lies the heart of any great ascent – the journey itself.

Gearing Up for the Summit

Before embarking on the journey up Mount Om, Surmount offers plenty of options to personalize your character and gear up for the climb. The creator allows tweaking everything from facial features to hairstyles and outfits. There’s a wide range to choose from for creating the perfect mountaineering avatar.

Surmount Review

Progression then comes through accumulating treasure along the way. Gems can be spent at shops between zones or found on climbs. This unlocks new boots, hats, and more to outfit your explorer. It’s rewarding seeing hard-earned gems go towards expressing individual style.

Gear isn’t just for looks either. Gems provide practical upgrades like better stamina regeneration or stronger grappling. This enhances each climber’s unique strengths, whether it’s brute force or tactical item use. It gives players agency to specialize their approach through custom upgrades.

The story smoothly handles advancement. Objectives are clear without feeling restrictive. Reaching new zones opens following areas but never demands rushing ahead. This respectful pace offers time to explore nooks and crannies, helping hone skills through practice on each mountain section.

Repeating routes reveals new secrets as abilities grow. What was once a challenge becomes easy, though the summit still calls adventurers to greater heights. Progress feels steady through natural gameplay, avoiding common frustrations of handholding or unnecessary backtracking.

In Surmount, personalization and growth go hand in hand. From the startup to taking that final step onto the peak, players shape their own engaging journey. Whether emphasizing style or skills, the freedom to specialize brings long-lasting fun to the climb.

Scaling New Heights Together

Surmount offers a unique way to experience the climb through its local co-op. Tethering to another player lets you support each other up treacherous sections. When stamina runs low, a partner can take the lead for a while. It makes tricky obstacles feel more surmountable with someone by your side.

Surmount Review

Reaching a campsite provides the perfect resting spot to save progress. Here, players can unwind between routes. Beyond regaining strength, camps become social hubs. Chatting climbers trade gear or engage in mini-games from the KlifDex like a quick game of Tetris. It adds personality to each stop along the summit.

Once the journey up Mount Om ends, the adventure continues. Daily challenge levels randomly generate fresh slopes to scale. With no expectations of completing the story, players can test their skills without pressure. It proves an enjoyable way to experience new mountaineering puzzles even after topping out.

Overall, co-op utilizes cooperation to encourage progression. Camps develop relationships while mini-games spice up breaks. Daily levels then sustain long-term engagement and mastering techniques. Together, these extra features enhance replay value and keep players engaged in the climbing thrill after finishing the campaign. Whether sharing the experience or perfecting solo skills, Surmount ensures the fun never stops atop its peaks.

Summits and Setting New Heights

Surmount takes players on a climbing journey unlike any other. From its quirky characters to terrain spanning snowy peaks and tropical jungles, every inch of Mount Om enthrals. Though technical issues exist, creative climbing mechanics hooked me from the start.

Surmount Review

Mastering momentum and stamina adds depth beyond mashing buttons. Clever items ensure challenges remain surmountable too. Accessibility settings let all experience thrilling ascents. Co-op multiplayer only enhances these feats of finesse and friendship.

Side activities like daily expeditions, gear customization, and NPC antics offer continued reasons to scale new altitudes. While story proves a secondary bonus, heartwarming enough.

Indie creators Indiana-Jonas and Jasper Oprel deserve praise for crafting a gem. Their vision launches a landmark in platforming adventures. Scenery scarcely feels procedurally generated thanks to care in construction.

Naturally, hope remains for smoothing any lingering glitches. Yet even unfinished, Surmount offers mountainous amounts of enjoyment. For those seeking thrills both virtual and visceral, its peaks await. Here rises a game certain to keep summiteers climbing ever higher for seasons to come. My sincerest thanks go to the developers for such an uplifting expedition.

The Review

Surmount

8 Score

With its tight climbing mechanics, charming characters, and consistently engaging challenges, Surmount establishes itself as a unique and highly enjoyable adventure in an already crowded platforming genre. Technical issues hold it back slightly, but creative design ensures traversing Mount Om remains as entertaining an expedition for players as it is for their digital mountaineers. Overall, this indie mountain succeeds gloriously in providing a thrill-filled experience worthy of repeat ascents.
