The Role He Refused: Donald Sutherland’s Principled ’24’ Decision

Hollywood Icon's Career Choices Reflect a Commitment to Meaningful Storytelling and Family Values

Donald Sutherland, the iconic Canadian actor who passed away in July 2024 at the age of 88, left behind a legacy of memorable performances and principled career choices. His son, Kiefer Sutherland, recently paid tribute to his father, calling him “one of the most important actors in the history of film.”

Donald Sutherland’s illustrious career spanned decades, featuring standout roles in classics like “MASH,” “Don’t Look Now,” and “Klute.” Despite never receiving an Academy Award nomination, he was widely regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation. In recent years, he captured the attention of younger audiences with his chilling portrayal of President Snow in “The Hunger Games” franchise.

Kiefer Sutherland, following in his father’s footsteps, became a household name himself, most notably for his role as Jack Bauer in the hit series “24.” It was during the show’s run that an intriguing opportunity arose for the father and son to work together, which Donald ultimately declined for a touching reason.

The producers of “24” had written the role of Jack Bauer’s father, Phillip Bauer, with Donald Sutherland in mind for the show’s sixth season. However, upon learning that the character was intended to be a villain trying to kill his son, Donald made the decision to pass on the role. In a 2006 BBC interview, he explained, “I didn’t want the first time I acted with my son to be as a father trying to kill him.”

Instead, Donald expressed a desire for their first on-screen collaboration to be something more positive, citing the relationship between Sean Connery and Harrison Ford in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” as an ideal example. The role of Phillip Bauer ultimately went to James Cromwell.

This decision reflects Donald Sutherland’s commitment to meaningful roles and his desire to protect the father-son relationship both on and off screen. Despite missing out on this opportunity, the Sutherlands did eventually share the screen in the 2015 Western “Forsaken,” where they played an estranged father and son duo.

Kiefer Sutherland’s recent tribute to his late father highlighted Donald’s passion for acting. “Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived,” Kiefer wrote.

Donald Sutherland’s career choices, including his decision to pass on “24,” demonstrate an actor who valued integrity and the power of storytelling. His legacy in film and television, from countercultural classics to modern blockbusters, ensures his place in the pantheon of great actors, regardless of formal accolades.

As the entertainment industry and fans worldwide remember Donald Sutherland, his son’s words ring true – he was indeed one of the most important actors in the history of film, leaving behind a body of work that will continue to inspire and entertain for generations to come.
