Actor Eric Dane, known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan (McSteamy) on ABC’s hit medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” has recently opened up about the circumstances surrounding his departure from the show after six seasons. In a candid interview on Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast, Dane revealed that his exit was not entirely his decision.

“I didn’t leave so much as I think I was let go,” Dane admitted. The actor, who joined the show at the end of season two and became a series regular in season three, portrayed the charismatic plastic surgeon until his character’s death in the beginning of season nine.

Dane acknowledged that he was struggling with addiction issues during his time on the show, but clarified that this wasn’t the primary reason for his departure. “They didn’t let me go because of that, although it definitely didn’t help,” he explained. Instead, Dane pointed to financial considerations as a significant factor.

“I was starting to become, as most of these actors who have spent significant time on a show, you start to become very expensive for the network,” Dane said. He added that the network likely believed the show would continue to perform well regardless of cast changes, “as long as they have their Grey.”

The actor also reflected on his personal struggles during his time on “Grey’s Anatomy.” Dane revealed that he had been sober for three to four years before joining the show but relapsed during the 2007 Writers Guild of America strike. “If you take the whole eight years I was on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, I was f—ed up longer than I was sober and that was when things started going sideways for me,” he admitted.

Despite the circumstances of his departure, Dane spoke positively about show creator Shonda Rhimes. “Shonda was really great. She protected us fiercely. She protected us publicly. She protected us privately,” he said. Dane emphasized that there was no dramatic firing, but rather a decision that he wouldn’t be returning to the show.

At the time of his departure in 2012, both Dane and Rhimes released statements expressing mutual appreciation. Dane thanked the “Grey’s” team for the experience, while Rhimes called the decision mutual and referred to Dane as part of the show’s “family.”

Dane’s character, Dr. Mark Sloan, was written off the show following a plane crash storyline. He made a brief return in season 17 during a dream sequence featuring other departed characters.

The actor’s revelations provide new insight into the behind-the-scenes dynamics of one of television’s longest-running medical dramas, highlighting the complex interplay between personal struggles, show economics, and creative decisions in the entertainment industry.
