Ubisoft has officially announced the release of “Beyond Good & Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition,” a remastered version of the cult classic action-adventure game, set to launch on June 25th, 2024. This surprise announcement comes after months of rumors and leaks, offering fans a chance to revisit the beloved title with modern enhancements while also stoking the flames of anticipation for its long-awaited sequel.

The remaster will be available across multiple platforms, including PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Ubisoft promises significant upgrades, with the game running at up to 4K resolution and 60 frames per second on compatible systems.

Beyond visual improvements, the 20th Anniversary Edition boasts several new features and quality-of-life enhancements. Players can expect an autosave function, the ability to skip cutscenes, full controller and keyboard & mouse support, and cross-save functionality across all platforms. The game’s iconic soundtrack has also received attention, with more than 15 pieces re-recorded by a live orchestra under the supervision of original composer Christophe Héral.

One of the most intriguing additions is a new treasure hunt throughout the game world of Hillys. This feature promises to shed light on protagonist Jade’s childhood and establish narrative connections to the long-anticipated “Beyond Good & Evil 2.” As players progress through the game and explore the planet, they can unlock exclusive cosmetic rewards.

For series enthusiasts and gaming historians, the remaster includes an anniversary gallery filled with never-before-seen artwork, videos, and anecdotes from the game’s development. This behind-the-scenes content offers a unique glimpse into the creation of what has become a beloved franchise.

The announcement has been met with mixed reactions from the gaming community. While many fans are excited to revisit the world of Beyond Good & Evil with modern enhancements, others remain skeptical, particularly regarding the status of “Beyond Good & Evil 2.”

Gaming industry analyst Maria Rodriguez commented on the situation: “The remaster seems to be Ubisoft’s way of keeping interest in the franchise alive. However, the lack of substantial updates on the sequel, which was announced over a decade ago, has left many fans disillusioned.”

Indeed, “Beyond Good & Evil 2” has become somewhat infamous in the gaming world for its prolonged development cycle. First announced in 2008, the game has seen sporadic updates and demonstrations over the years, but concrete information remains scarce.

“The inclusion of narrative links to the sequel in this remaster is intriguing,” Rodriguez added. “It could be seen as a positive sign that Ubisoft is still committed to the project, or it might be viewed by some as a way to placate an increasingly frustrated fanbase.”

Despite the controversy surrounding the sequel, the remaster itself appears to be a comprehensive package. Additional features include a new Speedrun Mode for competitive players and over 20 new achievements to unlock.

For collectors, a physical version of the game will be available for pre-order next month through Limited Run Games, though details on editions and pricing have yet to be revealed.

As the June 25th release date approaches, it remains to be seen whether “Beyond Good & Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition” will successfully reignite passion for the franchise or if it will be overshadowed by the ongoing uncertainty surrounding its sequel. Regardless, the remaster offers both longtime fans and newcomers the opportunity to experience a piece of gaming history with modern refinements.

Ubisoft’s decision to revisit this cult classic demonstrates the enduring appeal of Beyond Good & Evil. Whether this remaster serves as a swan song for the franchise or a stepping stone to its future remains one of the most intriguing questions in the gaming industry today.
