Nearly a decade after their last outing, the iconic Mario & Luigi duo is teaming up again for an all-new role-playing game on Nintendo Switch. Unveiled during the latest Nintendo Direct, Mario & Luigi: Brothership will set the famous plumbers on a high-seas RPG quest when it launches on November 7, 2024.
Marking the series’ first entry since 2015’s Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam on 3DS, Brothership finds the brothers transported to the tropical Concordia Islands. There, they’ll reunite with familiar faces like Princess Peach and Bowser, while meeting new pals like Connie and Snoutlet.
As expected, the turn-based combat the Mario & Luigi games are known for makes a return. Mario and Luigi will team up once again to solve environmental puzzles and take down enemies using their signature co-op attack moves and abilities.
From the trailer’s glimpses, Brothership appears to retain the bright, comedic tone that made the Mario & Luigi RPGs so beloved by fans. The game seems to draw visual inspiration from recent 3D Mario platformers, with settings reminiscent of the galaxy-hopping explorations in Super Mario Galaxy 2 and the vibrant island locales of Super Mario Odyssey.
One key difference for Brothership is that it will be the first main Mario & Luigi game not developed by AlphaDream, the studio that created the past six entries before going bankrupt in 2019. Nintendo subsequently acquired the IP rights and is now overseeing the project internally.
For many Nintendo fans, the announcement of a new Mario & Luigi game has been long overdue. The RPG spin-off series earned a strong following for its clever writing, unique battle systems, and nostalgic callbacks to past Mario adventures.
The wait appears to be finally over, as Mario & Luigi make their celebrated return to consoles after nearly a decade stuck on handhelds. With their next island-hopping escapade now on the horizon, the beloved brother duo are ready to sail into their next hilarious interdimensional misadventures on November 7th.
