While Sonic fans eagerly await the release of Sonic x Shadow Generations this October, SEGA’s Sonic Team is already looking ahead to the possibility of bringing more classic titles back with remastered editions. In a recent interview, veteran developer Takashi Iizuka indicated the studio will strongly consider additional remasters based on feedback and demand from the Sonic community.
“When we remastered Sonic Colors and there was Sonic Colors: Ultimate, we kind of wanted to think about what we could bring next as a remastered title,” Iizuka explained. “At that time, Sonic Generations was kind of what everyone was really excited (about), what they really wanted, and was really hungry for. That’s why we chose to do Sonic Generations and we added the Shadow Generations portion.”
He added, “Depending on what people like out there, if there’s a title people like, we’ll think about it for the next remaster.”
This leaves the door open for Sonic Team to revisit and modernize other fan-favorite entries from throughout the series’ 30-plus year history on consoles. While Iizuka didn’t confirm any specific games, he suggested some prime candidates could include the acclaimed Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 from the Dreamcast era, as well as titles like the shapeshifting epic Sonic Unleashed and the multiplayer focused Sonic Heroes from the 2000s.
SEGA has found success bringing classic Sonic games to newer platforms with enhancements. In addition to Sonic Colors Ultimate in 2021, this year’s Sonic x Shadow Generations reimagines the seminal 2011 release Sonic Generations with additional remixed levels starring Shadow the Hedgehog.
By gauging fan reactions to Sonic x Shadow Generations, SEGA may gain further insights into which iconic titles are most requested for remastered re-releases. With a vast back catalog spanning Genesis classics to modern hits, Sonic Team has no shortage of options to tap into the potent vein of Sonic nostalgia.
