The next Mortal Kombat movie is going to kick things up a notch. That’s according to Lewis Tan, who plays Cole Young in the films. Tan talked all about Mortal Kombat 2 at San Diego Comic-Con this year. He says the fights will be even longer and bloodier than before. The gore and violence will be more intense, bringing the film closer to the super crazy battles in the video games.
Tan explained that the filmmakers listened to what fans liked and didn’t like about the first movie. “We made the sequel a hundred times better based on your feedback,” he said. One big change – this time they’re including an all-important tournament, just like in the games. The first movie left that part out.
Not only that, but Tan hinted the new film is letting loose even more. While the first one grounded things by introducing Cole as a regular guy new to Mortal Kombat, now they can fully embrace the craziness. “The second movie has wild, insane nonsense and it’s incredible,” Tan teased. With the world established, they’ve got freedom to explore all the weird and wonderful parts of the franchise.
Tan seemed excited to work with Hiroyuki Sanada and Tadanobu Asano, who have gotten more attention lately for their roles in the Shogun TV show. They’re also adding Karl Urban, famous for playing Judge Dredd, as fan favorite Johnny Cage. Simon McQuoid is back to direct Mortal Kombat 2, scheduled for October 2025. The first movie was a surprise hit last year despite COVID, with fans watching both in theaters and at home.
As filming continues, gamers and film buffs alike can look forward to an all-out action extravaganza that delivers the over-the-top battles Mortal Kombat is known for. Mark my words, this sequel is going to be epic!
