The third and final season of the Netflix show “Vikings: Valhalla” takes us even deeper into the world of the fierce Viking warriors. This season introduces new details from real Viking history and some shocking plot twists that will surprise fans.
Early in the season, two fan-favorite characters – Leif Erikson and Harald Sigurdsson – join an elite fighting group called the Varangian Guard. This Guard protected the Byzantine Empire, which was a very powerful kingdom at the time. Serving in the Guard shows how Leif and Harald have developed their fighting skills in the seven years since leaving their Norwegian homeland. We see them help seize an important city in Sicily, impressing their Byzantine leader in the process.
However, their success causes jealousy from one of the Empire’s top generals, who wants power for himself. This feud sets off a dramatic chain of events, with Harald getting thrown in prison after being framed for murder! His daring escape is a thrilling highlight.
As the season goes on, some major characters meet their end. The death of King Canute by illness leads to a struggle over who should be the new ruler. Canute’s own grandfather is then killed by one of Canute’s sons, showing that royalty will turn against each other. More shocking deaths include the Emperor being assassinated at a party and Harald defeating the power-hungry general in an epic battle.
Back in Norway, the new ruler Magnus takes control in a brutal way – by eliminating anyone who challenges him, like Canute’s remaining family members. These kinds of ruthless tactics were common among Viking leaders looking to stay on top.
Most characters don’t survive the season, yet one – Magnus – lives to keep shaping events with his scheming. With the series now over, “Vikings: Valhalla” provides a visceral look at the lives of Vikings, from their honorable warrior codes to the cutthroat politics of kingdoms. The introduction of real history and game-changing character deaths sets an exciting finale that does this acclaimed show justice. Fans won’t want to miss the pulse-pounding conclusion now on Netflix.
