Acclaimed character actor John Turturro, known for his unforgettable roles in films like “Do the Right Thing,” “The Big Lebowski,” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou?,” will receive the prestigious Heart of Sarajevo Award at this year’s Sarajevo Film Festival. Taking place August 16-23, the festival honors Turturro for his considerable contributions to cinema over a career spanning four decades in front of and behind the camera.
With a versatile repertoire of both leading and supporting roles under directors like Spike Lee, Martin Scorsese, and the Coen Brothers, Turturro has continuously showcased his dedication to his craft and ability to inhabit any character with conviction. His acclaimed turn as Jesus Quintana in “The Big Lebowski” became one of the most iconic performances of the 1990s comedy genre. Turturro took home the Best Actor prize at Cannes for his bold performance in the Coens’ “Barton Fink,” highlighting his talents for unpredictable and compelling roles.
In addition to his esteemed acting career, Turturro has proven himself a talented director with films like “Illuminata,” “Romance & Cigarettes,” and “The Jesus Rolls,” in which he also reprised his iconic Quintana character. He has received plaudits for his small screen work as well, earning an Emmy for his guest role on “Monk” and recent acclaim on HBO’s “The Night Of.” Festival director Jovan Marjanović praised Turturro, stating “His dedication to authenticity and versatility are a joy to witness onscreen.”
During the festival, Turturro will participate in a masterclass, sharing insights from his four decades in the business. Attendees can also catch a special screening of “Barton Fink,” the film that first showcased Turturro’s incredible range. The Heart of Sarajevo Award is one of cinema’s highest honors, previously presented to esteemed talents like Robert De Niro, Angelina Jolie, and Charlie Kaufman. Turturro is most deserving of this prestigious recognition. Fans can next catch him in the second season of Apple TV+’s acclaimed series “Severance.”
