Payne revealed new storylines that will uncover secrets surrounding these mystical rings and the themes of unchecked power they represent.
According to McKay, the upcoming season will delve into a “tantalizing” part of Tolkien’s source material never before covered about how the dwarven rings, unlike their elven counterparts, did not fully control their wearers as Sauron intended. This will be a key storyline for King Durin III, played by Peter Mullan, as McKay ominously teased the monarch “going mad” in the dwarven kingdom of Khazad-dûm under the rings’ corrupting influence.
