The upcoming film “Queer” directed by Luca Guadagnino tells the story of a 1950s romance between two men. The movie stars veteran actor Daniel Craig alongside Drew Starkey, a rising talent best known for roles in teen projects.
“Queer” is set in Mexico City and explores themes of unrequited love between William Lee, played by Craig, and Eugene Allerton, portrayed by Starkey. Several scenes in the film showcase intimacy between the two lead actors.
In an interview, Starkey discussed his experience filming those scenes with Craig. He said establishing comfort with his co-star was important. During rehearsals, the actors did trust exercises to relax, like grabbing and throwing their bodies on each other. This “unlocked something subconsciously” and made acting intimate scenes together easy, according to Starkey.
Guadagnino, known for films like “Call Me By Your Name,” paid close attention to the actors’ comfort. Starkey said the director made sure rehearsals addressed intimacy months in advance. On set, the film crew blocked off private spaces for those scenes.
Portraying romance is a change for Starkey, whose previous roles involved teenage projects. He called Eugene a “very daunting” character to understand due to his subtle complexity. However, critics have praised both actors’ performances in “Queer.”
Audiences may learn more about human relationships through films embracing sexuality, Starkey noted. As “Queer” generates excitement heading into wider release, it seems poised to spark meaningful discussion through its intimate exploration of romance.
