Jeff Bridges Looks Forward to Improved De-Aging in Upcoming Tron Sequel

As he prepares to reprise his role as Kevin Flynn for the third time, actor Jeff Bridges reflects candidly on his experiences with the iconic sci-fi franchise - including one aspect of 2010's Tron: Legacy that still bothers him over a decade later.

Hollywood veteran Jeff Bridges is set to reprise his iconic role as Kevin Flynn in the upcoming Disney sci-fi film Tron: Ares. In a recent interview, the legendary actor reflected on his experiences in the Tron franchise so far. While Bridges enjoyed making 2010’s Tron: Legacy overall, he was less than pleased with how the early digital de-aging technology depicted him in the film.

“I got scanned for Tron: Legacy, but I didn’t like how I looked in the final product,” Bridges told a podcast. According to the actor, the de-aged version of himself in the movie resembled comedian Bill Maher more than his actual appearance. At the time, de-aging an actor through visual effects was cutting edge. But Bridges believes the technology has significantly advanced in the decade since.

The Oscar-winner notes that being scanned for de-aging purposes now feels like “leasing his image” for future roles. Advances made after Legacy mean the process for Tron: Ares could realistically recreate his younger appearance. While details of the new film’s plot are unknown, Bridges is slated to reprise his role as Kevin Flynn despite his apparent death in Legacy.

When reflecting on filming the original 1982 Tron, Bridges fondly remembered the challenges of visually bringing the digital world to life before CGI. The black-and-white production with reflective tape helped conceptualize the computer realm. After four decades in the franchise, Bridges expressed enthusiasm and optimism for how state-of-the-art technology may realize Tron: Ares, scheduled for release on October 10, 2025.
