Nicole Kidman will return in the second season of the Hulu series “Nine Perfect Strangers.” The Australian actress attracted wide audiences and critical acclaim for her portrayal of Masha Dmitrichenko in the first season.
Based on the bestselling novel by Liane Moriarty, “Nine Perfect Strangers” follows people seeking rehabilitation at an exclusive wellness retreat called Tranquillum House. Kidman stars as the mysterious Russian owner Masha, who uses unconventional methods that blur the lines between healing and manipulation. When the show premiered in August 2021, it immediately became one of Hulu’s most popular original series.
The first season consisted of eight episodes exploring complex themes like trauma, addiction, and the desire for quick fixes. Kidman’s nuanced performance as Masha kept viewers guessing about her true motivations and past. One critic said Masha could have become a caricature in less skilled hands, but Kidman brought her to life with authenticity and depth. She received wide praise for portraying Masha’s blend of allure and unease.
In addition to Kidman, the first season ensemble cast included Melissa McCarthy, Michael Shannon, Luke Evans, and Bobby Cannavale. Each actor added layers to their characters, but Kidman stood out for her ethereal presence as Masha. The limited series format was originally intended to tell a self-contained story in one season.
However, Hulu surprised many by announcing in June 2023 that the show would return for a second installment. Kidman is set to reprise her Emmy-winning role, joined by new cast members Murray Bartlett, Annie Murphy, Christine Baranski, and Henry Golding. This continuation suggests the program’s popularity and Kidman’s appeal contributed to the studio’s decision. It also allows further exploration of Masha and Tranquillum House in ways not possible in a single season.
